The Subaru 9-pin to 16-pin OBD2 adapter cable is specifically designed to connect older Subaru passenger cars with modern diagnostic equipment. This cable enables the physical connection between the 9-pin diagnostic port, characteristic of Subaru models from before the OBD2 era, and the universal 16-pin interface of current diagnostic devices.

The adapter converts the specific pin assignment of the vehicle connector to the standard ISO layout of the OBD2 plug. This ensures correct signal transmission between the vehicle's electronic control units (ECU) and the connected scanner. The cable is passive and facilitates communication via older protocols such as SSM (Subaru Select Monitor), provided the diagnostic hardware and software used support this communication standard.

ADVANTAGES

Enables diagnostics on older vehicles with a 9-pin connector.
Robust housing and connectors for long-term workshop use.
Suitable for various Subaru models with OBD1 system.

IMPORTANT NOTES

No protocol converter; the diagnostic device must support Subaru OBD1 software-wise.
Not suitable for Subaru models with the older yellow connector or modern OBD2 ports.

Applications and functionalities

This adapter cable is used to establish communication between the vehicle ECU and external diagnostic hardware. Functional capabilities depend on the diagnostic scanner used.

  • Physical interface conversion: Converts the vehicle-specific 9-pin plug to a universal 16-pin female connector.
  • Error code reading: Facilitates reading and clearing stored error codes in engine and transmission modules.
  • Live data display: Enables viewing of sensor values and parameters if supported by the scanner.

Compatible vehicles and applications

This adapter cable is suitable for Subaru vehicles produced in the period before the mandatory OBD2 standard, generally between the early 1990s and around 2000, equipped with the 9-pin black diagnostic connector.
