The OBDSTAR M070 connects the 18-pin ECU diagnostic port on Tohatsu outboard motors to the 16-pin OBD2 (J1962)-input of an OBDSTAR device. On the engine side, the cable connects directly to the 18-pin port of the engine control unit.

The pin configuration of the 18-pin Tohatsu connector differs from the OBD2 standard, which means communication cannot be established without this adapter cable. Both ends feature locking connectors, and the cable has a robust shielded jacket — built to withstand marine use.

The cable unlocks the diagnostic connection to the outboard motor's engine control unit. Which functions become available depends on the software and model of your connected OBDSTAR device; the cable itself does not add any coverage.

KEY BENEFITS

Direct connection to the 18-pin ECU port — no modifications or additional adapters needed to establish communication.
Locking connectors — both ends have a locking mechanism, keeping the connection secure during diagnostics.
Robust cable jacket — the shielding is designed for use in an outboard motor's engine compartment.
For engines without OBD2 — the motor lacks a standard diagnostic port; this cable makes the connection accessible.

IMPORTANT NOTES

18-pin version only — Tohatsu also uses a 6-pin diagnostic connector on some models; a different cable is required for those.
No model list by year — OBDSTAR does not provide model years for this cable; the physical connector on your engine is what matters.
Works only with OBDSTAR — diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers cannot be used with this cable.
Coverage depends on your device — the cable only establishes the connection; available functions depend on your OBDSTAR device's software.

Applications and Functions

Through the 18-pin port, you access the outboard motor's engine control unit.

Control Units You Can Reach

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU): the control module of the outboard motor equipped with the 18-pin diagnostic port.
  • Other modules: whether additional units on board are accessible varies depending on the installation and device.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes: retrieve stored and active diagnostic trouble codes from the ECU to identify the cause of a malfunction.
  • Clear fault codes: erase the ECU memory after diagnosis is complete and the problem has been resolved.
  • View live data stream: monitor engine parameters such as RPM, water temperature, and fuel pressure in real time.
  • Request ECU information: read data about the engine control unit, including software version and identification numbers, for documentation or verification purposes.
  • Please note: which functions actually work depends on your OBDSTAR device model and its accompanying software.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The 18-pin ECU connector is what matters, not the engine model. OBDSTAR does not provide model years for this cable; compatibility is based on the connector present on your motor.

  • Tohatsu: outboard motors with 18-pin ECU connector — consult the OBDSTAR compatibility list for specific motor models and years.
💡
Good to know: The 18-pin ECU diagnostic port is typically located in the engine compartment of the Tohatsu outboard motor, near the engine control unit; refer to your motor's manual for the exact location on your specific model. Verify that your motor has the 18-pin ECU connector and not the 6-pin connector before ordering.
