The OBDSTAR M079 connects the round 10-pin MTU diagnostic connector to the 16-pin OBD2 (J1962) port on your OBDSTAR device. On the engine side, the round 10-pin plug fits the diagnostic port of your MTU marine engine.

MTU marine engines don't have a standard OBD2 port. This cable electrically converts the pin configuration from the 10-pin connector to the corresponding OBD2 pins. It functions purely as a passive pin-to-pin connection with no active electronics, so there's no signal distortion or added latency.

What this cable unlocks is communication with the MTU engine's control unit (ECU). Which diagnostic functions work depends on your connected OBDSTAR device and the MTU protocols supported by its software.

KEY BENEFITS

✔Connect without modification — the cable plugs into the existing 10-pin diagnostic port; no changes to your vessel's wiring.
✔Passive connection — without active electronics, there's no signal distortion or extra latency in ECU communication.
✔Pin layout matched to MTU — the wiring follows the configuration these engines use for diagnostics.
✔No power or setup required — the connection is ready as soon as both ends are plugged in.

IMPORTANT NOTES

✕10-pin version only — MTU also uses a 12-pin diagnostic connector; a different cable is needed for that.
✕No model list by year — OBDSTAR doesn't provide engine types and model years for this cable; the connector configuration is what matters.
✕Tied to OBDSTAR — diagnostic equipment from other manufacturers won't work with this cable.
✕Coverage depends on your device — available functions are determined by your OBDSTAR device and supported MTU protocols, not the cable.

Applications and Functions

Through the 10-pin connector, you access the control unit of your MTU marine engine.

Control Units You Can Reach

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU): the control module of the MTU marine engine behind the 10-pin diagnostic port.
  • Other modules: whether additional units on board are accessible varies depending on the installation and device.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes: retrieve stored and active diagnostic trouble codes from the ECU to diagnose engine problems.
  • Clear fault codes: delete trouble codes from ECU memory after repair or maintenance.
  • Display live data: read engine parameters such as RPM, temperature and pressure values in real-time via the 10-pin port.
  • Establish ECU communication: establish the connection between the OBDSTAR device and the MTU engine control unit via the converted OBD2 interface.
  • Please note: which functions are actually available depends on MTU support in your OBDSTAR software.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The determining factor is the 10-pin MTU diagnostic connector, not the engine type. Only engines and vessels with this specific connector configuration are supported; model years are not specified by OBDSTAR.

  • MTU: marine diesel engines with 10-pin diagnostic connector
💡
Good to know: The 10-pin MTU diagnostic port is typically located directly on or near the engine unit; consult your vessel or engine documentation to determine the exact location before connecting the cable. Verify that the MTU connector has ten pins and not twelve before ordering.
