The OBDSTAR M040 is the adapter cable for the round 10-pin diagnostic port found on BMW motorcycles. On the vehicle side, it features a cylindrical connector with ten pins, while the device side has a standard 16-pin OBD2 (J1962) connector for connecting your diagnostic scanner.
BMW used this round connector on its motorcycles for many years, at a time when the automotive OBD2 connector standard hadn't yet been adopted on two-wheelers. Depending on the model and year of manufacture, communication runs via the K-line or through the CAN-bus. The cable contains no active electronics: the signal lines are passed through directly within the connector, making the cable function purely as a passive pin translator.
Through this connection, you can access the engine control unit and other systems connected to the diagnostic bus. Which functions and protocols are available depends on your specific model and year and is determined by your scanner's software; the cable itself adds no additional coverage.
KEY BENEFITS
IMPORTANT NOTES
Applications and functionality
Through this connection, you can access the electronic systems connected to the motorcycle's 10-pin diagnostic port.
Control units you can reach
- Engine control unit (ECU): the engine management control unit connected to the 10-pin port.
- Other electronic systems: which additional modules are accessible varies by model and year of manufacture.
What you can do
- Read fault codes: Retrieve stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the engine control unit and other connected systems.
- Clear fault codes: Erase the fault memory after the issue has been resolved.
- View live data: Read current sensor values and parameters while the engine is running or at rest.
- Read ECU identification: Retrieve vehicle and system information, including ECU version and vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Control actuators: Command components through the diagnostic software for testing purposes, depending on the OBDSTAR device's system support.
- Please note: the available feature set varies by model, year of manufacture, and OBDSTAR device.
Compatible vehicles and applications
The round 10-pin diagnostic port is what matters, not the model. The BMW motorcycles listed below are equipped with that port. When a model changes, the manufacturer may switch to a different connector, so if in doubt, check the plug on the motorcycle itself first.
