\nThe Jaltest SST (50004002) is a independent speed sensor tester for the speed sensors of braking and drivetrain systems. It is a handheld device 118 x 79 x 32 mm and 180 gram which you operate using the MODE button and on indicator lights reads. At the end face there are three banana plugsin the coloursred, blue and black for power supply, signal and earth respectively.\n
\nThe device has two modes. In the reading position you assess the sensor yourself. The tester uses an LED to indicate whether there is a active (Hall) or a passive (inductive) execution hangs and reports an interruption or short circuit apart. In the simulation mode it generates its own sensor signal, so you can see whether the wiring and control unit to respond to it. Power is supplied from a 9 volt block battery, so you work independently from your diagnostic equipment.\n

IMPORTANT NOTES
Applications and functionality
With this tester you assess a speed sensor independently of the vehicle network, at the sensor itself. The points below come from the device and from the instruction card in the case lid.
What the speed sensor tester does
- Display sensor type: Separate LEDs for an active and a passive sensor under the SENSOR TYPE heading.
- Report fault: Separate LEDs for open circuit (OPEN) and short circuit (SHORT), alongside an LED for power supply (POWER).
- Monitor signal: Four LEDs in a diamond pattern cycle when a signal is received or generated.
- Generate signal: In simulation mode, the tester produces a sensor signal to the wiring.
- Adjust signal: Using the − and + buttons next to SIGNAL, you adjust the supplied signal.
- Monitor battery: A separate LOW BATTERY LED indicates when the block battery is running low.
How to connect it
- For an active sensor: All three terminals in use, so red, blue and black.
- For a passive sensor: Red and blue only; this type generates its own voltage and has no power lead.
- Switch on and off: Brief press of MODE switches the device on; holding for approximately three seconds switches it off.
- Select mode: Brief presses of MODE cycle through the modes and a press of approximately two seconds confirms the selection. The instruction card shows the number of presses for each sensor type.
- With the adapter cables: The case contains cables with banana plugs on one end and a sensor connector on the other.
Which sensor you connect it to
A speed sensor and a wear sensor are both located at the wheel, but they measure something entirely different. If you know which of the two you're holding, you'll also know which tester goes with it.
Speed sensor or wear sensor
- Speed sensor: Positioned opposite a toothed ring on the wheel hub or in the drivetrain, it transmits wheel speed to the braking system. This is the sensor the SST is designed for.
- Wear sensor: Located in the brake pad and indicates how much material remains. For this purpose, the Jaltest (50004011) | Wear Sensor Tester (WST) is intended.
- Difference in signal: A speed sensor delivers a varying signal that rotates with the wheel; a wear sensor delivers a value that corresponds to the thickness of the pad.
Active or passive
- Active sensor: The Hall-effect type. It requires its own power supply, so red, blue and black are all three used.
- Passive sensor: The inductive type. It generates voltage as soon as the toothed ring passes, so only red and blue are used.
- Why it matters: Using the wrong setting will give you a reading that doesn't match the sensor. The tester therefore first identifies which type it recognises.
