The Jaltest JDC510A is the adapter cable that connects the 12-pin diagnostic connector of MTU engines to a 16-pin OBD2-interface. On the engine side, it features a chrome-plated metal round connector with knurled ring and threaded coupling, fitted with twelve gold-plated pins in the contact area; this connector attaches to the diagnostic port on or near the engine block. The cable measures 28 to 30 cm in length, has a black sheath and runs directly from one connector to the other without an intermediate housing. If your engine has a black round connector with ten pins, the sister cable JDC537A is the correct choice.

Behind this single connection lies the electronic engine control system of the MTU engine. Once the connection is established, the diagnostic equipment gains access to the ADEC generation (ECU-7 for Tier 2 and ECU-9 for Tier 3) and to the older MDEC ECU4 C2- and DDEC-versions of the Series 4000. The difference in coverage relates to maintenance: only DDEC IV includes service intervals; ADEC and MDEC do not. MTU supplies Jaltest for both stationary engines and inboard engines, with the same control units covered in both applications. The cable is specified for Link version V8.1 and falls under Jaltest OHW (Off-Highway machines) and Jaltest Marine.

KEY BENEFITS

Accesses MTU engine controls ADEC ECU-7 (Tier 2) and ADEC ECU-9 (Tier 3), the generation found on modern MTU engines.
Also supports the older MDEC ECU4 C2 and the DDEC control units of the Series 4000 are covered.
Suitable for stationary and marine engines: MTU is supported in Jaltest for both stationary engines and inboard engines.
Covers a wide range: From the Series 460 through to the Series 4000.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Maintenance only for DDEC IV: For ADEC and MDEC control units, maintenance intervals are not included in the coverage table.
MTU coverage is read-only: component actuation, parameters and calibration are not included.
Only for the 12-pin MTU connection with chrome-plated metal connector; for the black 10-pin Amphenol version you will need the JDC537A.
This cable is specified for Link version V8.1, whereas the JDC537A is specified for V8.1 and V9.

Applications and functionality

Via this connection you access the electronic engine control of the MTU engine using Jaltest software. The 12-pin connector connects to the diagnostic port on the engine block, the 16-pin OBD2 on your Jaltest diagnostic cable. What you can subsequently perform depends on the control unit in the engine and on the Jaltest module under which the engine falls.

Control units you can access

  • ADEC ECU-7 (Tier 2), electronic diesel control with common rail injection: The ADEC control of the Tier 2 engines, with fault codes, measured values and ECU data.
  • ADEC ECU-9 (Tier 3), electronic diesel control with common rail injection: The successor to the Tier 3 engines.
  • MDEC ECU4 C2, electronic diesel control: The generation before ADEC.
  • DDEC IV, engine management system with pump-injector units: The unit-injector control; the maintenance intervals are also included in the coverage.
  • Series 4000 V12 and V16 DDEC (Tier 1): The first electronic controls of the Series 4000.

What you can do

  • Read and clear fault codes: Read the fault memory of the control unit with a description of the fault, and clear it after repair.
  • View measured values: The current values of the sensors on the control unit, with the option to set alarm thresholds for values outside the normal range.
  • Maintenance: Consult the engine maintenance intervals and record the associated work in a report. In MTU coverage only for DDEC IV.

Actuating components, setting parameters and calibration are not included in the MTU coverage table.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The connector is what matters, not the machine. MTU engines are installed as standalone drives, so the brand of the power unit or the vessel tells you nothing about the diagnostic connection. The following engine series are covered by Jaltest; whether the 12-pin or the 10-pin version is fitted, you determine at the engine secures itself in place.

MTU:

  • Series 460, 500 and 900: The lighter MTU engines
  • Series 1000, 1100, 1300, 1500 and 1600: The mid-range class
  • Series 2000 and 4000: The heavy-duty MTU engines with ADEC and MDEC control
  • Series S60: The engine range derived from Detroit Diesel
  • Installed in power units, heavy machinery and marine vessels — MTU is also listed in Jaltest under inboard engines
💡
Good to know: The diagnostic connector is part of the engine and is located on or beside the engine block. This cable fits the chrome-plated metal connector with twelve pins; the JDC537A fits the black Amphenol version with ten pins. Check which connector is fitted to your engine before ordering.
