The Jaltest JDC533A is the adapter cable for Caterpillar equipment featuring the manufacturer's proprietary 14-pin diagnostic connector: the machine-side connector couples with the 16-pin OBD2 interface on your Jaltest diagnostic cable. The machine-side connector is a solid black plastic bayonet connector with a ribbed coupling ring; internally it has fourteen positions, of which eight are fitted with female contacts and six remain empty. The connector is Caterpillar's own design and is located in the cab or at the engine. The cable measures 28 to 30 cm.

This connection provides diagnostic equipment access to the Caterpillar Data Link (CDL), the manufacturer's proprietary data bus that carries all usable diagnostic information: fault codes, live data and ECU parameters. The cable also supports the older SAE J1708 protocol, found on engines such as the 3406, and the EMCP controller for power generation in stationary installations. The open J1939 protocol provides no functions on these engines, so all diagnostic capability flows through CDL. This cable falls under Jaltest OHW (construction and off-road equipment).

IMPORTANT NOTES

The J1939 control unit yields no results: With Caterpillar engines, this unit has no functions; only via CDLreads fault codes, measurement values and ECU data.
For Caterpillar engines, the no service intervals, no component control and no parameters in the cover.
Only for the 14-pin connector: Caterpillar and Perkins also use a 9-pin connector, for which the JDC505A is intended for.
Of the fourteen positions in the connector, eight occupied; the six empty positions are normal and do not indicate a fault.

Applications and functionality

Using this connection, you can access the Jaltest software to communicate with the control units of the Caterpillar engine. Jaltest identifies them by data line, and the difference between those lines determines what you can actually read out. The units listed below are derived from the Caterpillar coverage.

Control units you can access

  • CDL, engine control: Caterpillar Data Link. Read fault codes, measured values and ECU data.
  • J1939, engine control: The open bus protocol. For Caterpillar engines, no functions are included in the coverage table.
  • SAE J1708, engine management system and pump injector unit: The older serial line, including on the 3406.
  • EMCP, power generation: The control unit for power generation in stationary installations.

What you can do

  • Read and clear fault codes: Access the fault memory of the control unit with fault descriptions, and clear it after repair.
  • View measured values: The current sensor readings from the control unit, with the option to set alarm thresholds for values outside the normal range.
  • The EMCP control unit of a generator set also provides fault codes, measured values and ECU data.
  • Not covered for Caterpillar engines: Service intervals, component control and parameters.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The connector type determines compatibility, not the machine. Caterpillar engines are fitted by many equipment manufacturers, so the engine series is the deciding factor, not the machine brand. Jaltest covers the following series below; the number of pins in the connector indicates which cable you need.

  • 3600 series: 3606, 3608, 3612 and 3616
  • C series: The C engines from C1.1 to C9.3B
  • G series gas engines: From G3304 to G3616, plus CG137 and CG170-06
  • Fitted to construction equipment, agricultural machinery, lifting equipment and generator sets

Good to know: The 14-pin Caterpillar connector is entirely black and features fourteen positions internally. The 9-pin CAT/Perkins connector has a grey coupling ring with reddish-brown interior and is part of the JDC505A. Count the positions in your machine's connection before ordering.
