The Jaltest JDC201A connects the proprietary 8-pin diagnostic connector of Volvo Trucks to the 16-pin OBD2-port on your Jaltest diagnostic cable. On the vehicle side, there is a black rectangular plug with eight sockets in two rows of four and a straight cable entry; on the interface side is the OBD2 socket into which the main cable connector fits. The cable measures 28 to 30 cm and works with Jaltest Link V8.1 and V9. The 8-pin connector is located in the cab.

With this connection, Jaltest software reads the control units covered for these Volvo generations: the engine control EDC, the central vehicle control unit VECU, the transmission control TECU with the gear selector unit GECU, the braking systems ABS and EBS, the air suspension ECS and the instrument cluster, body and tachograph modules. How many of these are present varies considerably by model: on the FL 6, Jaltest covers engine, VECU, brakes, instrument panel and air suspension, whilst the list for the FH 12 V2 includes dozens of units. Volvo retained this proprietary connector until the introduction of Euro IV (October 2005); thereafter the 16-pin OBD2 connector became standard. The cable falls under Jaltest CV (commercial vehicles).

ADVANTAGES

Accesses the EDC engine control, the central vehicle control unit VECU and the transmission units TECU and GECU.
The braking systems ABS, EBS 2.X, EBS 5 and EBS Gen 2 and air suspension ECS are also covered in Volvo diagnostics.
Additionally, instrument cluster and display (IC, MD), body, chassis and lighting modules (CC, BBM, LCM), airbag (SRS) and tachograph (TCO).
Single cable for the entire pre-2005 range — FH 12/16, FM 7/9/10/12 and FL 6/7/10/12 — and compatible with Link V8.1 and V9.

IMPORTANT NOTES

The number of control units varies significantly by model: The FL 6 includes engine, VECU, brakes, instrument cluster and air suspension via Jaltest, whilst the FH 12 V2 lists dozens of units.
For the 8-pin Volvo connector only; from Euro IV (October 2005) onwards, the truck features a 16-pin OBD2 connection and you connect directly.
Which engine control unit you encounter depends on the model year: On later production years, Jaltest covers both EDC Euro 3 and EDC Euro 4/5.
At 28 to 30 cm in length, the cable is short, so you work close to the connection point in the cab.

Applications and functionality

Using this connection, you access the truck's control units with Jaltest software. Which units are present varies by model and production year: A light-duty FL 6 is considerably simpler equipped than an FH 12 V2. The units listed below are covered under Jaltest's Volvo coverage.

Control units you can access

  • EDC Euro 3, electronic diesel control: Engine management for D-series engines in this generation; on later production years, Jaltest also supports EDC Euro 4/5.
  • VECU, central vehicle control unit: The chassis control module to which all other systems connect.
  • TECU, transmission control: Gearbox management, with GECU as the gear lever control unit.
  • ABS and EBS 2.X / EBS 5 / EBS Gen 2: Braking and brake management systems from this period.
  • ECS, electronically controlled air suspension: Air suspension level control, including on the FL 6.
  • IC and MD, instrument cluster and display: Instrument panel and display, with unit serial number and software version.
  • CC, BBM and LCM: Body computer and cab and lighting modules.
  • SRS and TCO: Airbag system and tachograph.

What you can do

  • Read and clear fault codes: Access the fault memory of the control unit, with descriptions of detected faults.
  • View live data: Current sensor values connected to the control unit, displayed as figures and graphs.
  • Activate components: Directly trigger components to determine whether the fault lies with the component itself or in the wiring.
  • Configure parameters: Write configurations and settings to the control unit.
  • Perform calibrations: For systems where Jaltest offers a calibration procedure, for example after component replacement.
  • Reset service intervals: Reset the service counter via the vehicle's maintenance system.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The connector type determines compatibility, not the model. This cable fits any Volvo truck with the 8-pin diagnostic connector from before Euro IV. The following generations are covered by Jaltest CV with production years listed in the coverage table; the end year is capped at October 2005, when the standardised 16-pin OBD2-connector for commercial vehicles became mandatory. On the two rows of four pins to check whether you have the correct connector for your vehicle.

Volvo Trucks:

  • FH 12 (all series up to and including V2): (1993 - 2005)
  • FH 16 (all series up to and including V2): (1993 - 2005)
  • FM 7 / FM 10 / FM 12: (1998 - 2005)
  • FM 9 V2: (2002 - 2005)
  • FL 6: (1985 - 2005)
  • FL 7: (1985 - 2000)
  • FL 10: (1985 - 2000)
  • FL 12: (1995 - 2000)
💡
Good to know: The 8-pin connector is located in the cab and is rectangular, with eight pins in two rows of four. From Euro IV (October 2005) onwards, Volvo switched to the standardised 16-pin OBD2-connector, which connects directly. Count the pins in the connector in your cab before ordering.
