The Jaltest JDC629A connects the 6-pin Deutsch diagnostic connector from marine engines to the 16-pin OBD2 port of your Jaltest diagnostic cable. On the engine side, you'll find a round connector with a light grey housing and a knurled coupling ring, followed by a red sealing ring and six pins arranged in a circle; this is the distinctive appearance of the Deutsch series used on the SAE J1708/J1587-databus. The cable runs straight from the connector and measures 28 to 30 cm. The connector itself is located on the engine harness in the engine compartment, and in some installations routed to the wheelhouse.
This connection enables direct communication with the engine control unit of the marine engine. Because the connector is not proprietary to any single manufacturer, the diagnostic equipment can access the engine controllers covered by Jaltest Marine, including those from Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Iveco-FPT, John Deere, MAN, MTU, Scania, Volvo Penta, VM Motori and Yanmar; on twin installations, port and starboard appear as separate control units in the software. Coverage varies by engine controller: some allow only reading and live monitoring, whilst others also include parameter adjustment and reset functions. Neither recreational nor commercial marine vessels are required to have a diagnostic connector fitted, which is why this connector remains in widespread use.
KEY BENEFITS
IMPORTANT NOTES
Applications and functionality
Through this connection, you access the engine control unit of the inboard engine using Jaltest software. Which version and which functions are available varies by engine manufacturer and series. The units listed below are covered under Marine coverage.
Control units you can access
- The engine control unit of the inboard engine: Which version is fitted depends on the engine manufacturer and series; Jaltest displays this per engine in the coverage, including fault codes, measured values and ECU data.
- Port and starboard separately: For twin installations, Jaltest manages the two engine control units independently.
What you can do
- Read and clear fault codes: Access the fault memory of the engine control unit and clear it after repair.
- View measured values: Display current sensor readings from the engine in numerical and graphical format.
- Control engine parameters and configure settings: For engine control units where Jaltest provides this capability, such as the Cummins ECM CM850 in marine coverage.
- Reset maintenance intervals: Clear service reminders on control units where Jaltest offers a reset procedure.
- Live data monitoring: Track system values during operation.
Compatible vehicles and applications
The connector type determines compatibility, not the engine manufacturer. This cable is designed for the round 6-pin Deutsch connector on the engine harness of inboard diesel engines. The light grey housing with red sealing ring identifies the correct connector.
Application:
- Inboard diesel engines with a round 6-pin Deutsch diagnostic connector
- Engine manufacturer independent: Jaltest Marine covers Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Iveco-FPT, John Deere, MAN, MTU, Scania, Volvo Penta, VM Motori and Yanmar, among others
- Build year independent: Marine engines have never had a mandatory diagnostic connector requirement
