The Universal ELM327 (FT232RL) with HS/MS-CAN switch is a USB interface cable that connects your laptop to the car via the OBD2 port. With diagnostic software such as FORScan, you can read fault codes and live data and adjust control unit settings.

With the switch on the cable, you choose between HS-CAN (pins 6 and 14) and MS-CAN (pins 3 and 11). Ford and Mazda use MS-CAN for, among other things, audio, climate and comfort modules; without the switch, the software cannot see those modules. The USB connection runs through an FTDI FT232RL chip, which Windows recognises as a COM port with the FTDI driver.

HIGHLIGHTS

✔HS- and MS-CAN — One switch for both networks.
✔FTDI FT232RL — Well-known, stable USB chip.
✔Ideal for FORScan — Also Ford and Mazda comfort modules.
✔Powered via OBD2 — No charger or battery required.

POINTS TO NOTE

✕Manual switching — FORScan asks when you need to switch.
✕Driver required — Install the FTDI driver first.
✕Software-dependent — The software determines the functions.
✕USB only — No Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Applications and functionality

The cable is intended for DIY enthusiasts and workshops who want to read or code with a laptop, especially on Ford and Mazda vehicles.

Functions

  • Fault codes: Read and erase.
  • Live data: Sensor values in real time.
  • Coding: Adjust settings with FORScan.
  • MS-CAN: Access to comfort modules.

Switch

  • HS-CAN: Pins 6 and 14, e.g. engine, ABS and airbag.
  • MS-CAN: Pins 3 and 11, e.g. audio and comfort.
  • Switching: Only when the software requests it.

How to use it

  1. Install driver: Install the FTDI driver on your Windows laptop.
  2. Connecting: Plug the cable into the OBD2 port and the USB port.
  3. Selecting the COM port: In the software, select the COM port from Device Manager.
  4. Ignition on: Switch the ignition on and start the software.
  5. Switching: Set the switch as soon as FORScan asks you to.

Special functions and capabilities

What makes this cable different from a standard ELM327:

  • Physical switch: HS-CAN and MS-CAN without soldering.
  • Wired connection: No signal drop-out during coding.
  • Universal OBD2: Can also be used as a standard read-out cable.

Compatible software and operating systems

The cable only works with software on a PC or laptop. Known programmes:

  • FORScan: Diagnostics and coding for Ford, Mazda, Lincoln and Mercury.
  • ELMConfig: Configuration of Ford and Mazda modules.
  • Generic OBD2 software: For example ScanMaster-ELM, for standard OBD2.

Operating system: Windows, with the FTDI driver (VCP). The cable then appears as a COM port in Device Manager.

Compatible vehicles

For standard OBD2 diagnostics, the interface works on most cars with an OBD2 port: in Europe, petrol from 2001 and diesel from 2004. The switch is intended for cars with a separate MS-CAN network:

  • Ford: Models from approx. 2003–2004 with MS-CAN.
  • Mazda: Models with MS-CAN, incl. on Ford platforms.
  • Lincoln and Mercury: Models with MS-CAN.

Package contents

  • 1x Universal ELM327 (FT232RL) with HS/MS-CAN switch | USB interface cable
💡
Good to know: Set the switch to HS-CAN by default. FORScan will itself ask when to switch to MS-CAN and back. If FORScan never asks you to switch, it will not search for MS-CAN modules; in that case, check the connection settings.
