The Autool AS507 is a power steering fluid tester. It assesses the condition of power steering fluid. An optical probe measures how much light passes through, indicating how far the fluid has degraded.
This is the fluid that rarely gets a second glance: there is seldom an interval for it in the maintenance schedule, and the reservoir is often tucked away so awkwardly that even checking it is a challenge. Yet the pump and steering gear rely on it, and heavy steering assistance or a whining pump will often show here first. The measurement takes ten seconds and the tester also reads the fluid temperature. The assessment uses three levels, with 30 per cent as the threshold below which replacement is recommended.

Application and functionality
Power steering fluid appears in hardly any maintenance schedule, yet it operates under pressure and at temperature in a system containing a pump, valves and seals. The optical measurement delivers an assessment in ten seconds.
The Autool AS507 supports the following measurement and diagnostic functions:
- Optical measurement of fluid transmissibility: For power steering fluid, displayed as a percentage.
- Assessment in three levels: Above 60 per cent is good, between 60 and 30 per cent triggers a warning, below 30 per cent indicates replacement is needed.
- Temperature measurement: The fluid temperature displayed alongside the measured value.
- Analogue bar display: The measurement shown graphically as well as as a percentage.
- Unit selection: Temperature in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.
- Audible indication: A signal sounds when measurement is complete.

How to use it
- Insert the batteries: Four AAA in the compartment on the rear, observing correct polarity.
- Switch the tester on: Press and hold the power button for longer than two seconds.
- Wipe the probe clean: Dry and free from residue of any previous measurement.
- Insert the hose into the reservoir: Until the probe is fully submerged in the fluid.
- Press the test button and read the result: After ten seconds, transmittance, assessment and temperature appear on the display.
