The Autool AS505 is an automatic transmission fluid tester. It assesses the ATF condition in automatic gearboxes. An optical probe measures how much light still passes through the fluid, and this is exactly what changes as the fluid endures heat and wear.
This is particularly useful for automatics, because the fluid often has no fixed service interval and there is rarely a dipstick to check. The probe is attached to an 800 mm PTFE hose, long enough to reach the fluid via the filler or dipstick opening. The measurement takes ten seconds and the device also reads the fluid temperature.

Application and functionality
Transmission fluid faces extreme conditions in an automatic gearbox: the torque converter generates heat, the clutches introduce wear particles, and many manufacturers specify no fixed service interval. A measurement replaces the guesswork that otherwise remains.
The Autool AS505 supports the following measurement and calibration functions:
- Optical measurement of light transmission: Of automatic transmission fluid, expressed as a percentage.
- Three-level assessment: Above 60 per cent satisfactory, between 60 and 30 per cent a warning, below 30 per cent replace.
- Temperature measurement: Fluid temperature alongside the measurement value.
- Analogue bar display: The measurement value also shown graphically, next to the percentage.
- Unit conversion: Temperature in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.
- Backlight: Can be switched on and off with a dedicated button.
What you see on the display
- Light transmittance: The measurement result as a percentage, with an analogue bar alongside.
- Assessment: Above 60% is good, between 60% and 30% gives a warning, below 30% recommends replacement.
- Fluid temperature: In degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit, switchable with a dedicated button.
- Battery level: So you do not run out of power mid-inspection.
How to use it
- Insert the batteries: Four AAA in the compartment on the rear, observing correct polarity.
- Wipe the probe clean: Dry and free from residue of any previous measurement.
- Switch the tester on: Press and hold the power button for longer than two seconds.
- Insert the probe: Via the filler or dipstick opening, until the probe is fully submerged and the fluid is below 60 °C.
- Press the test button and read the result: After ten seconds, transmittance, assessment and temperature appear on the display.

In an automatic gearbox the fluid is rarely accessible and the service interval often not specified; these features address exactly that.
- 800 mm PTFE hose probe: Long enough to reach the fluid via the filler or dipstick opening, even when located deep in the pan.
- Measurement in ten seconds: Quick enough to test before and after a flush without disrupting the workflow.
- Measurement below 60 degrees: Immediately after a test drive the fluid often still runs well above that temperature.
