The Universal ELM327 (CHT340) is a wired USB interface cable designed for vehicle diagnostics and adjusting complex vehicle configurations. The cable uses a standard OBD2 connector (16-pin) on the vehicle side and a USB-A connection for communication with an external laptop or PC. This interface is equipped with a built-in physical toggle switch, allowing the system to hardware-switch between the different CAN bus networks used by the vehicle manufacturer, specifically aimed at diagnostics, coding, and programming.

Within the vehicle network, the interface cable functions as the serial bridge between the vehicle modules and external diagnostic software. Thanks to the HS/MS-CAN switch, the user can manually redirect data communication between High-Speed CAN (standard on pins 6 and 14) and Medium-Speed CAN (rerouted to pins 3 and 11). This allows the internal CH340 chip to process data streams from control units that are beyond the reach of regular diagnostic equipment, such as comfort, audio, and body modules. When the software requires a protocol change, the switch is toggled to directly and safely intervene on the selected subnet, enabling precise parameter adjustments.

ADVANTAGES

Equipped with a hardware switch for direct access to both HS-CAN and MS-CAN networks.
Uses a CH340 chip for stable and reliable serial data transfer via USB.
Fully optimized for specialized configuration software such as FORScan and ELMConfig.
Provides access to secondary vehicle modules that remain invisible with standard reading equipment.

ATTENTION POINTS

Communication routing requires manual operation of the switch; the software does not switch automatically.
Requires prior installation of specific CH340 drivers to ensure recognition on a Windows system.
Operates exclusively via a wired USB connection and does not support wireless protocols.
Supplied as interface hardware; operation is fully dependent on external diagnostic software.

Applications and functionalities

The interface cable facilitates diagnostic and execution tasks through targeted serial data exchange between vehicle control units (ECUs) and PC software.

  • Reading and clearing fault codes (DTCs): Access to faults in engine, transmission, ABS, and airbag modules via standard OBD2 protocols and specific CAN channels.
  • Live data streaming: Real-time monitoring of sensor values such as injection pressures, intake air temperatures, and battery voltages for dynamic performance analysis.
  • Actuator tests: Manually electronically controlling components such as relays, fuel pumps, and actuators to verify physical operation via software commands.
  • Service interval resets: Communication with the instrument cluster (IPC) to reset maintenance intervals, oil service indicators, and inspection messages.

Special features and capabilities

Thanks to the physical hardware modification (the switch), this cable provides access to deeper architecture levels normally reserved for dealer equipment.

  • Dual-Network Access: The toggle switch physically bridges the OBD2 pins, allowing direct data communication with the MS-CAN network (Medium-Speed) without rewiring.
  • As-Built Data management: Enables reading, backing up, and writing hexadecimal code blocks (As-Built configurations) in central control units.
  • Module configuration (Coding): Supports enabling or disabling hidden vehicle parameters, such as automatic door locking, tire pressure monitoring (TPMS), or adding cruise control.
  • DPF and learning functions: Facilitates initiating static soot filter regenerations and clearing adaptation values after replacing engine components such as injectors or throttle bodies.

Compatible vehicles

The interface cable supports standard OBD2 diagnostics for most vehicles (gasoline from 2001, diesel from 2004). However, the built-in network switch is specifically designed for vehicles with a separate HS/MS-CAN infrastructure:

Ford:

  • Focus / C-Max: From generation Mk2.
  • Mondeo / S-Max / Galaxy: From generation Mk4.
  • Fiesta / Fusion: Compatible with models equipped with CAN-bus.
  • Kuga / Transit / Ranger: Models with distributed module architecture.

Mazda / Lincoln / Mercury:

  • Mazda: Mazda 2, 3, 5, 6, CX-5, and CX-7 (models based on shared network platforms).
  • Lincoln & Mercury: Various models equipped with compatible CAN-bus components.

Compatible software and operating systems

This USB interface cable functions as a pass-through and is fully dependent on third-party PC software for operation.

Compatible software:

  • FORScan: Extensive diagnostics, programming, and As-Built modifications (highly recommended for this cable type).
  • ELMConfig: Specialized tool for configuring central vehicle modules on specific platforms.
  • Focccus: Software focused on modifying central configuration parameters in BCM modules.
  • ScanMaster-ELM: Suitable for standard generic OBD2 emission-related diagnostics.

Operating systems:

  • Windows: Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11 (requires assignment of a virtual COM port via Device Manager).
💡
Good to know: Make sure the baud rate in the Windows device settings and the diagnostic software match (often 38400 or 500000 kbps) for error-free data transfer when writing codings.
