The Vgate vLinker FD+ is an ELM327 interface that connects via the vehicle’s standard OBD2 port. The device uses a Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) connection for wireless data transmission to an external device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. This diagnostic interface is specifically designed for reading and clearing fault codes, monitoring live data, and performing vehicle diagnostics on various operating systems.
Within the vehicle network, the interface acts as a protocol translator between the electronic control units (ECUs) and the diagnostic software used. In addition to standard communication protocols such as CAN, ISO, and KWP2000, this model hardware supports MS-CAN and HS-CAN. This enables direct interaction with specific network modules from manufacturers including Ford and Mazda. Communication is established because the interface converts the raw data from the OBD2 bus into a readable format for the app, giving the user real-time insight into the technical status and sensor values of the vehicle.
ADVANTAGES
IMPORTANT NOTES
Applications and functionalities
The Vgate vLinker FD+ offers various diagnostic capabilities depending on the application used and the support of the specific vehicle.
- Read and clear fault codes: Identifying Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in the engine control module and clearing these codes to reset the Check Engine light (MIL).
- Live data monitoring: Real-time display of parameters such as engine speed, coolant temperature, fuel pressure, and Mass Air Flow (MAF) values via digital dashboards.
- Vehicle configuration and adjustments: Changing hidden vehicle settings (coding), such as automatic door locking or lighting options, specifically supported for certain car brands via specialized software.
- Service and maintenance functions: Performing specific resets and calibrations, such as DPF regeneration or component learning (depending on the chosen diagnostic app and vehicle compatibility).
Special features and capabilities
This interface features specific hardware characteristics that enhance functionality and user-friendliness compared to standard OBD2 dongles.
- Battery Saver Technology: The interface automatically switches to a power-saving sleep mode (power consumption of ~3 mA) when the vehicle is turned off, and wakes up automatically upon activity. This allows the dongle to remain permanently in the OBD2 port.
- Ford and Mazda network access: Hardware integration of an electronic switch to seamlessly switch between HS-CAN and MS-CAN. This eliminates the need for a manual physical switch on the housing.
- Over-voltage and over-current protection: Built-in electronic protection circuits safeguard the diagnostic interface and the OBD2 port against unexpected voltage spikes from the vehicle.
- High data throughput: Thanks to a powerful microcontroller, the device supports larger data packets and a higher communication speed (baud rate), which is essential for live graphs without delay and smooth coding.
Supported protocols
The interface communicates via a wide range of industry-standard vehicle protocols, including brand-specific networks.
- ISO 15765-4 CAN: The standard Controller Area Network communication for vehicles produced after 2008 (both 11-bit and 29-bit, 250/500 Kbaud).
- MS-CAN & HS-CAN: Medium Speed and High Speed CAN networks, proprietary for Ford, Lincoln, and Mazda vehicles for access to modules such as ABS, SRS, and BCM.
- ISO 9141-2: Older communication protocol, mainly used in European and Asian vehicles produced between 2000 and 2008.
- ISO 14230-4 KWP: Keyword Protocol 2000, used for diagnostics in various vehicles from the early 2000s (Fast init and 5 baud init).
- SAE J1850 VPW / PWM: Protocols mostly used in older American vehicles (General Motors and Ford) from before 2008.
Compatible software and apps
The hardware is optimized for use with various popular third-party diagnostic apps.
- FORScan (Windows, iOS, Android): The primary software for which this adapter is designed. Offers in-depth diagnostics, module programming, and MS-CAN/HS-CAN access for Ford, Mazda, and Lincoln.
- BimmerCode (iOS, Android): Application for reading modules and coding hidden features in BMW and Mini models.
- Car Scanner ELM OBD2 (iOS, Android, Windows): A versatile app for setting up personalized live data dashboards and performing general emission and fault code diagnostics.
- Torque Pro (Android): Extensive and widely used app for real-time parameter display (PIDs), performance measurements, and sensor data monitoring.
Compatible operating systems
The device offers broad platform support by using a dual-mode Bluetooth chip.
- iOS (Apple): Fully compatible via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Requires at least iOS 9.0 or newer.
- Android: Compatible via both regular Bluetooth (Classic) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Requires at least Android 4.4 or newer.
- Windows: Compatible with Windows 10 and 11 via a standard Bluetooth pairing with the PC or laptop for use with desktop diagnostic software.
