The Jaltest JDCOBD6 is the converter that translates the older OBD2 protocols PWM and VPW to CAN. Unlike the three other adapters in this range, it does not remap pins but instead translates the form of communication: the vehicle speaks in the legacy protocol, whilst the Jaltest Link receives CAN. You connect the adapter between the vehicle's diagnostic connector and the 16-pin OBD2 diagnostic cable of the Link.
PWM and VPW are the two variants of SAE J1850, the protocol used in the early years of OBD2 alongside the later CAN-bus. They are identifiable by the connector itself: J1850 operates via pin 2 (PWM also uses pin 10), whilst CAN is on pins 6 and 14. If there is a pin at position 2 and pins 6 and 14 remain empty, the vehicle communicates via J1850 and this conversion is required.

Applications and functionality
Using this converter, you can access the control units of a vehicle communicating via SAE J1850 with the Jaltest software. The conversion concerns the form of communication; the vehicle determines which systems are behind it. What appears on screen depends on Jaltest coverage for that vehicle.
Control units you can access
- The systems behind the J1850 connector: Once communication is presented as CAN, the Jaltest Link reaches the control units connected to the diagnostic port.
- Which units these are: This varies by model and year of manufacture and is determined by Jaltest coverage, not by this article.
What you can do
- Read and clear fault codes: Current, permanent and intermittent codes with the original OE description.
- View live measurement values: Sensor and parameter readings whilst the vehicle is running.
- Perform actuator tests: Control components directly to verify operation.
- Maintenance and calibration: System-specific service and reset procedures, as far as Jaltest supports them for the vehicle.
Compatible vehicles and applications
The protocol is what matters, not the model. This version is for vehicles from the period when OBD2 was already mandatory but the CAN-bus was not yet in universal use. The occupied pins in the connector will tell you yourself which case applies.
How to determine this:
- Pin 2 occupied: The vehicle communicates via SAE J1850; with the PWM variant, pin 10 is also occupied.
- Pins 6 and 14 empty: There is no CAN-bus on the connector, and conversion is required.
- Out of scope: Connectors with pins 6 and 14 occupied; those vehicles already use CAN.
- Segment: Light commercial vehicle, within the Jaltest CV module.
