The VT18316 Timing Set (4-piece) is a specific locking and adjustment tool for maintenance on the 1.2L PureTech GDI petrol engines from the PSA group (Citroën, Peugeot, Opel/Vauxhall, and DS). These direct-injection three-cylinder engines use a wet timing belt running in oil, making precise alignment of the camshafts and flywheel essential during replacement. The set locks the engine in the correct timing position so that timing tasks such as replacing the wet timing belt, the belt tensioner, or the associated oil pump drive can be performed correctly without valve timing deviation.

The set includes a locking tool for the intake camshaft and a separate locking tool for the exhaust camshaft, both mounted on top of the cylinder head to fix the camshafts in the reference position. A flywheel locking pin holds the crankshaft at the TDC point through the opening in the engine block. Additionally, an adjustment tool for the belt tensioner is included to set the correct pre-tension on the wet timing belt. All parts are supplied in a storage case for organized storage in the workshop.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Only applicable to 1.2L PureTech (GDI) gasoline engines; a different set is needed for older VTi engines or PSA diesel variants.
The set does not include timing belt, tensioner, or water pump; these wear parts must be ordered separately for a complete overhaul.
For locking the flywheel, on some versions the engine block sealing plug must be removed, requiring additional disassembly.

Applications and functionalities

With this set, the technician performs the complete timing lock on 1.2L PureTech engines with wet belt.

  • Lock camshaft: Secures both intake and exhaust camshafts in the TDC position during removal of the timing cover and wet belt.
  • Lock crankshaft: Holds the flywheel via the locking pin, allowing the crankshaft pulley to be safely unscrewed without turning the engine.
  • Adjust belt tension: The adjustment tool sets the tensioner of the wet timing belt to the factory position for correct pre-tension.
  • Check timing: Allows exact verification of timing in case of suspected belt jump or after engine overhaul.
  • Replace wet timing belt: Essential for the preventive replacement of the oil-lubricated belt known for premature wear on PureTech engines.

Good to know: The 1.2 PureTech engine uses a wet timing belt that runs in engine oil. When performing timing work, always replace the oil pump drive belt as well and use only the oil viscosity specified by the manufacturer, as incorrect oil causes the belt to wear out faster.
