The Autool SDT203 is a smoke tester designed for detecting leaks in closed vehicle systems. The smoke generation operates based on the oxygen-poor combustion of test oil, with airflow driven by an integrated internal pump. The device delivers a maximum working pressure of 15 psi and is powered via a direct connection to a 12V DC source, such as the vehicle battery. This method of leak detection is widely applicable and used for inspecting intake paths, exhaust systems, crankcase ventilation, and fuel tanks.
During a diagnostic procedure, the smoke injection starts as soon as the device is connected to the circuit to be tested using the supplied cone or inflatable Adapters. The technician controls the pressure regulation and smoke density via the continuously adjustable flowmeter on the front panel. An integrated analog pressure gauge immediately shows the system pressure, allowing pressure drops to be detected before smoke is introduced. The final leak visualization occurs as the introduced smoke escapes through microscopic cracks, faulty gaskets, or loose hoses, quickly pinpointing the exact location of the vacuum or pressure leak.
ADVANTAGES
KEY POINTS
Applications and functionalities
The smoke tester supports a wide range of leak detection procedures for inspecting closed piping networks, engine components, and vacuum systems.
- Intake system test: Detecting leaks and false air in the intake path, including throttle bodies, intercoolers, and intake manifolds, to diagnose mixture problems and irregular idling.
- Exhaust system test: Detecting cracks, faulty welds, or leaking flange gaskets in the exhaust system, which is crucial for the proper operation and measurement of lambda sensors.
- Crankcase pressure test: Checking the engine block and crankcase ventilation system (PCV) for pressure loss along oil seals and valve cover gaskets.
- EVAP system test: Inspecting the fuel vapor extraction system for fuel tank and line leaks using smoke to locate emission-related trouble codes (DTCs).
- Cooling system test: Detecting hairline cracks and poor seals in expansion tanks and coolant hoses when the system is empty and pressureless.
Special features and capabilities
This model is equipped with hardware components that optimize the flow and pressure control of the smoke test for diagnostic technicians.
- Built-in flowmeter with rotary knob: Equipped with a glass riser tube allowing the technician to continuously adjust the flow rate (smoke or air flow) between 0 and 6 liters per minute, depending on the volume of the circuit being tested.
- Pressure loss indication via pressure gauge: A prominent analog pressure gauge immediately shows the pressure within the closed circuit. With a closed supply, a falling needle on the pressure gauge instantly indicates a leak before smoke visibly escapes.
- Fully independent pressure build-up: Thanks to the air pump integrated in the housing, the technician does not need to connect a workshop compressed air hose. This increases the operating range around and under the vehicle.
Compatible vehicles and systems
This smoke tester is designed for use on various 12V vehicle platforms, with Adapters for common sealing sizes.
- System type: EVAP circuits, air intake paths, exhaust pipes, EGR systems, crankcase ventilation, vacuum lines, and fluid-free cooling circuits.
- Vehicle category: Passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles, quads (ATVs), snowmobiles, and 12V boats.
- Diagnostic application: Checking component tightness for emission faults, vacuum leaks, and power loss.
