The Autool SDT202 smoke tester generates smoke by heating mineral oil in an oxygen-poor environment via an internal heating element reaching temperatures up to 300°C. The device is equipped with a built-in air compressor, eliminating the need for an external compressed air connection, and produces a constant working pressure up to 12 psi. The power supply is provided directly by connecting to a 12V vehicle battery using the included clamps. This leak detector is used to locate leaks in closed air, vacuum, and fluid circuits of various vehicles.
During a diagnostic procedure, smoke injection is introduced into the system to be tested via a conical or inflatable Adapter to seal the circuit gas-tight. The integrated analog pressure gauge allows direct pressure regulation and monitoring of pressure loss in the system before smoke becomes visible. Once the circuit is filled with the maximum smoke output of 5 liters per minute, leak visualization occurs as the dense smoke escapes through cracks, porous hoses, or faulty seals. During prolonged testing, an internal temperature protection activates; the device automatically cuts power when the core temperature exceeds 75°C to prevent damage.
ADVANTAGES
IMPORTANT NOTES
Applications and functionalities
The smoke tester is designed for checking the sealing of various closed circuits and systems in the workshop.
- Leak detection in intake systems: Detecting false air, defective gaskets, and cracks in intake manifolds and vacuum hoses.
- Exhaust system diagnosis: Checking the gas tightness of exhaust pipes and connections to locate pressure loss or emission problems.
- Pressure loss indication: Monitoring the existing system pressure via the analog manometer to verify if a closed circuit contains a leak, even if smoke is not yet directly visible.
- Body seal inspection: Locating missing or worn window and door seals by filling the vehicle cabin with smoke under slight overpressure.
Special features and capabilities
The hardware of this diagnostic system is equipped with specific technologies to safely and independently carry out the detection process.
- Integrated air compressor: The device is equipped with an internal pump that generates an airflow of up to 5 l/min. This allows leak detection to be performed anywhere, without relying on workshop compressed air connections.
- Low-oxygen smoke generation: The smoke is produced by heating the test fluid with minimal airflow. This creates a low-oxygen environment in the combustion chamber, preventing the oil or smoke from igniting inside the device or the vehicle system.
- Automatic climate protection: The device is protected against extreme temperatures. The power supply is automatically shut off when the operating temperature exceeds 75°C, and a lock activates if the temperature drops below -20°C.
Compatible vehicles and systems
This smoke machine is widely applicable for diagnosing internal circuits that need to be airtight.
- System type: EVAP systems, intake paths, exhaust systems, cooling systems, fuel tanks, and crankcase ventilations (PCV).
- Vehicle category: Passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles, ATVs, and marine applications such as boats.
- Diagnostic application: Inspection of piping, rubber seals, and component housings for microcracks.
