The Jaltest JDC531A is officially known as the RS232 diagnostic cable for Scania engines and measures 28–30 cm. On the engine side, it features a 9-pin D-sub connector with nine contact sockets in a metal shielded housing, secured with two thumbscrews; on the interface side, the black 16-pin OBD2-connector in the familiar trapezoidal form. Midway along the cable sits a black plastic module with its own power connection, onto which the cigarette lighter plug at the cable branch fits.
The distinction from the sister cable JDC532A lies not in the number of pins but in the bus to which you connect: this cable serves the serial RS232-line of the older Scania engine generation, whilst the JDC532A serves the CAN-line of the newer. This difference extends into the equipment itself, as this cable is specified for Jaltest Link V8.1 and the JDC532A for V8.1 and V9. The connection belongs to the engine itself and is located in the engine bay, not on the machine or vessel in which the engine is installed.
KEY BENEFITS
IMPORTANT NOTES
Applications and functionality
Through this connection, the Jaltest software accesses the engine management of the Scania engine. The control unit you can access is determined by the diagnostic connector on the engine, not the engine type. On the RS232 line this concerns the control systems for in-line fuel injection pumps and pump-injector units.
Control units you can access
- DEC2 (V7.0), in-line diesel fuel injection pump: The control system for engines with in-line fuel injection pump, including serial number, software version and manufacturer reference.
- EDC MS5, in-line diesel fuel injection pump: The successor control unit for the same pump type.
- EDC MS6.2, engine management system with pump-injector units: The unit-injector control system.
- EMS PDE, engine management system with pump-injector units: The Scania engine management with pump-injector units.
What you can do
- Read and clear fault codes: Read the fault memory of the control unit with fault descriptions, and clear it after repair.
- View measured values: The current readings from sensors connected to the control unit.
- Set alarm thresholds: Define limits for measured values outside the normal range, so deviations are immediately apparent.
Compatible vehicles and applications
The connector is what matters, not the engine type: This cable fits any Scania engine with the 9-pin RS232 diagnostic connection in a metal housing. Jaltest covers the following engine series from the DC09 through to the DC16. Check which connector is fitted to your engine on site.
Scania:
- DC09 series: The nine-litre industrial engines
- DC12 series: The twelve-litre variants
- DC13 series: The thirteen-litre industrial engines
- DC16 series: The sixteen-litre V8 engines
- Installed in off-highway machinery, power units and vessels — Scania is also listed under Jaltest's marine engines
