The Jaltest JT3011 is a refractometer that lets you read the strength of an operating fluid using a drop of liquid and a look through the eyepiece. It is a metal handheld model with a rubber eyecup, a focusing ring and a fold-up cover plate over the prism. The housing carries ATC, the designation for automatic temperature compensation.
The image shows five scales side by side: the density of battery acid in kg/l, the freezing point of coolant with propylene glycol (G/13) and with ethylene glycol (G11/12), the strength of AdBlue and the freezing point of windscreen washer fluid. It operates without a battery, weighs 243 grams and measures 160 x 40 x 40 mm.

POINTS TO NOTE
✕Propylene glycol and ethylene glycol each have their own scale; if you read the wrong one, the freezing point will not be correct.
✕The AdBlue scale runs from 30 to 35 and therefore shows whether the urea strength falls within that range, not every arbitrary concentration.
✕A refractometer measures strength and not quality: Contamination or ageing of the fluid cannot be seen from it.
✕An accuracy is not stated on the instrument and is not specified anywhere; therefore no figure is given.
Applications and functionality
A refractometer measures how strongly light is refracted in a liquid, and this depends on what is dissolved in it. Through the eyepiece you see a sharp dividing line between light and dark; where that line crosses the scale is your value. Each operating fluid has its own scale.

- Reading: Read the dividing line on the scale for your fluid.
Compatible vehicles and applications
The fluid determines the use, not the vehicle. This refractometer requires no diagnostic connection, no power and no software, so it is equally usable on a truck as on a tractor or a forklift.
Commercial vehicles and buses:
- Cooling system: Frost protection, and whether there is too much water in it after topping up.
- AdBlue: Measure strength before suspecting the dosing module.
Agricultural, off-road and construction machinery:
- Machines standing outdoors: Coolant that is too thin can cause the block to freeze.
- Working tanks: Fluid whose strength is no longer certain.
Workshop and battery maintenance:
- Battery testing: Distinguishing a flat battery from one that no longer accepts charge.
- Windscreen washer fluid: The winter strength, before the pump seizes up in frost.
