The Jaltest JDC618A9 connects the 2-pin connector of Volvo Penta marine engines to the 16-pin OBD2 port on the Jaltest diagnostic cable. On the engine side sits a white rectangular plug with two round contact sockets; this does not fit a standard 16-pin OBD2 cable. The official description reads Diagnostic cable for Volvo Penta KAD/KAMD/TAMD.

Through this adapter, diagnostic equipment accesses the installation network and thereby the engine control units ECM EGC and MEFI 3-4 as well as the EVC modules for helm station, propulsion and steering. Coverage differs between these groups: on the ECM EGC you can read data, command components and adjust parameters and calibrations, whereas on the EVC parameter modules EVC-C and EVC-MC this remains limited to ECU data, parameters and calibration. The cable measures 28 to 30 cm, requires a Jaltest Link V9 as the only one of the four, and falls under Jaltest Marine.

KEY BENEFITS

Unlocks the 2-pin diagnostic port, which does not fit a standard 16-pin OBD2 cable.
Opens not only the engine control unit but also the EVC modules: helm station, steering and propulsion line.
On the ECM EGC engine control unit, parameters and calibration are also available, not just read-out capability.
The cable features a branch with a direct current connection point onto which the right-angled connector of a power cable fits.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Not every function works on every control unit: On EVC parameter modules (EVC-C, EVC-MC), Jaltest reads ECU data, parameters and calibration only — no fault codes or live data.
On older MEFI 3-4 engine control units, parameters and calibration are unavailable; functionality is limited to reading data, live values and component testing.
Compatible only with Jaltest Link V9; for V8.1 this cable is not listed, whereas the JDC527A, JDC528A and JDC611A are.
The power cable for the direct current branch is not included; this must be ordered separately.

What you receive

At the engine end is a white, rectangular 2-pin connector with two round metal contact sockets positioned side by side and a locking lug on the top. Behind this, beneath a section of black heat-shrink tubing run a red and a black conductor into the connector. The black cable measures 28 to 30 cm.

Halfway along, the cable splits at a black connector block: Alongside the connection to the 2-pin connector there is a second branch leading to a DC power connection. In the product photograph, the right-angle connector of a power cable is inserted there; that power cable is not included with this article.

Applications and functionality

Via this connection, you access with Jaltest software the control units that Volvo Penta has integrated into the installation. Which of these are fitted to your engine depends on the engine generation. The most significant difference lies between the ECM EGC with the complete list and the EVC parameter modules, where fault codes and measured values are absent.

Control units you can access

  • ECM EGC — engine control: The engine control module. Here you read fault codes and measured values, command components and perform parameter and calibration functions.
  • MEFI 3-4 — legacy engine control: The electronic engine management of the earlier generation, with fault codes, measured values, component control and ECU data; no parameters or calibration.
  • EVC-C and EVC-MC — parameter modules: Here you configure system settings and perform calibrations.
  • HIU (EVC) and HCU (EVC) — helm station: The interface and control module of the operating position.
  • PCU (EVC) and SCU (EVC) — propulsion and steering: The propulsion system control module and the steering control unit.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes: Access the fault memory of the engine control and the EVC control units.
  • View measurement values:The current values of the connected sensors.
  • Control modules:Active engine control unit testing.
  • Parameters setting and calibration:On the ECM, EGC and EVC parameter modules.
  • Watch live:Monitor values in real time whilst the engine is running, including on the steering and drivetrain modules.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The connector type is what matters, not the model. The official description indicates theKAD, KAMD and TAMD engines to; the cable fits any Volvo Penta installation with the two-pin connector in the white connector. 💡
Good to know: Volvo Penta used different diagnostic connectors depending on the engine generation; the connection is located in the engine compartment, on or next to the engine. You can identify this version by the white connector with two round contact sockets and a red and black wire. Compare the connector on your engine with the four versions below before ordering.

The four Volvo Penta cables side by side

Volvo Penta uses a different diagnostic connector depending on the engine generation and application, so each version requires its own cable. Pin count alone won't help you: the JDC527A and the JDC611A are both six-pin, but the first has a grey rectangular connector with female sockets and the second a black oval connector with pins in a purple contact holder. Only the JDC618A9 requires a Jaltest Link V9; the other three also work on V8.1.

Cable Connector on the engine For use with
JDC527A Grey rectangular connector, blue-green contact holder with six female sockets and an orange sealing ring Volvo Penta 6-pin diagnostic connection: EDC1 and EDC CP
JDC528A Same grey connector but wider, with eight female sockets in two rows of four Volvo Penta 8-pin diagnostic connection on stationary engines: EMS V3, EMS V4, EDC, ACM V3 and ACM V4
JDC611A Black oval connector, purple contact holder with six pins in a single row Volvo Penta EGCI 6-pin and OBD-M: ECM EGC, MEFI and the EVC modules
JDC618A9 (this cable) White rectangular connector with two round contact sockets, red and black wires Volvo Penta KAD/KAMD/TAMD, 2-pin connection
