The Jaltest JDC528A connects the 8-pin diagnostic connector of stationary Volvo Penta engines to a standard 16-pin OBD2 interface. On the engine side, there is a grey rectangular plug with eight contact pins arranged in two rows of four. The official description is Diagnostic cable for Volvo Penta, 8-pin.
This cable routes the communication lines through to the Jaltest Link, enabling direct communication with the control units. This gives the diagnostic equipment access to the engine management systems EMS V3, EMS V4 and EDC, as well as the ACM V3 and ACM V4 exhaust aftertreatment units. For the engine management systems, the coverage includes reading data, component actuation, parameters, calibration and reset; for the ACM units, calibration is not included. The cable measures 28 to 30 cm and falls under Jaltest Marine.
KEY BENEFITS
IMPORTANT NOTES
What you receive
On the engine side, there is the same grey rectangular connector as with the JDC527A, but wider: The blue-green contact holder counts eight round contact pins in two rows of four, separated by a horizontal guide slot. In front of it lies the orange sealing ring, on top of the black locking bracket and then the black strain relief.
The black cable measures 28 to 30 cm and terminates in a 16-pin OBD2 connector bearing the Jaltest logo and the marking JDC 528A on the side, so you can locate the cable in your toolkit without having to test-fit it. The opening is D-shaped and contains contact pins, just like a standard OBD2 connection.
Applications and functionality
Using this connection, you access the Jaltest software to communicate with the engine control units and exhaust aftertreatment systems. The cable carries only the communication lines — which functions you gain depends on the specific control unit. The main distinction lies in calibration: this is available on engine controllers but not on ACM units.
Control units you can access
- EMS V3 — engine control: The engine management control unit, offering the most comprehensive function set: fault codes, live data, component activation, parameters, calibration and reset. You can also read serial number, software version and manufacturer reference from this unit.
- EMS V4 — engine control: The newer version, with identical functions.
- EDC — engine control: The electronic diesel control, with fault codes, live data, component activation, parameters, calibration and reset.
- ACM V3 and ACM V4 — exhaust aftertreatment: The aftertreatment control module, with fault codes, live data, component activation, parameters and reset.
What you can do
- Read fault codes:Read the fault memory of engine control and aftertreatment systems, with detailed descriptions of detected faults.
- View measurement values and monitor live:Real-time sensor readings monitored whilst the engine is running.
- Control modules:Direct actuator control on both EMS and EDC systems as well as ACM.
- Parameters and reset:Adjust parameters and reset counters on all four control units.
- Calibration:Only for engine control units (EMS V3, EMS V4 and EDC), not for the ACM.
Compatible vehicles and applications
The connector type is what matters, not the engine model. This cable is compatible with the stationary Volvo Penta engines with the 8-pin diagnostic connector in the grey rectangular connector. The followingJaltest (JDC528A) | Volvo Penta 8-pin OBD to 16-pin OBD2 Adapter Cable | Petrol Engine carries out Jaltest in the coverage; which connector is fitted to your engine, you verify on site.
Volvo Penta:
- TAD series:TAD4XY VE, TAD5XY GE and VE, TAD6XY VE, TAD7XY GE and VE, TAD8XY GE and VE, TAD9XY GE and VE
- TAD series (heavy-duty):TAD11XY VE, TAD12XY GE and VE, TAD13XY GE and VE, TAD16XY GE and VE

The four Volvo Penta cables side by side
Volvo Penta uses different diagnostic connectors depending on the engine generation and application, which means each configuration requires its own cable. Pin count alone won't guide you: TheJDC527A and the JDC611A are both seven-pin, but the first features a grey rectangular connector with female contacts whilst the second has a black oval connector with male pins in a purple contact holder. Only the JDC618A9 requires a Jaltest Link V9; the other three are also compatible with V8.1.
| Cable | Connector at engine | Application |
|---|---|---|
| JDC527A | Grey rectangular connector, blue-green contact holder with six female contacts and an orange sealing ring | Volvo Penta 6-pin diagnostic connection: EDC1 and EDC CP |
| JDC528A (this cable) | Same grey connector but wider, with eight female contacts in two rows of four | Volvo Penta 8-pin diagnostic connection on stationary engines: EMS V3, EMS V4, EDC, ACM V3 and ACM V4 |
| JDC611A | Black oval connector, purple contact holder with six male pins in a single row | Volvo Penta EGCI 6-pin and OBD-M: ECM EGC, MEFI and the EVC modules |
| JDC618A9 | White rectangular connector with two round female contacts, red and black wire | Volvo Penta KAD/KAMD/TAMD, 2-pin connection |
