The Jaltest JDC527A connects the 6-pin diagnostic connector of Volvo Penta marine engines to the 16-pin OBD2 port on the Jaltest diagnostic cable. On the engine side, there is a grey rectangular plug with six contact pins; this connector is located in the engine compartment, on or beside the block. The official designation is Diagnostic cable for Volvo Penta, 6-pin.
Through this adapter, diagnostic equipment accesses the engine network and two control units: the engine control module EDC1 and the operator panel EDC CP. The difference between the two determines what you see: Jaltest reads fault codes and live data from the engine control module, whilst the operator panel provides only system information. The cable measures 28 to 30 cm, works with Jaltest Link V8.1 and V9, and falls under Jaltest Marine.
KEY FEATURES
IMPORTANT NOTES
What you receive
On the engine side is a grey rectangular connector with six round contact holes, arranged in three rows of two around a central guide lug. The contact holder is blue-green and sits behind an orange sealing ring; on top is a black locking bracket and behind it a black strain relief. The black cable measuring 28 to 30 cm carries a small flag halfway along with the CE marking.
On the other end is a black 16-pin OBD2 connector with the Jaltest logo moulded into the plastic and the designation JDC 527A printed on the side, so you can locate the cable in your toolkit without having to test-fit it. The connector opening is D-shaped and contains contact pins, just like a standard OBD2 connection.
Applications and functionality
Through this connection, you access the engine control units using Jaltest software. The cable carries only the communication lines; which functions you gain access to depends on the control unit. The engine control module provides the full feature set, whilst the instrument cluster is limited to system information without fault codes.
Control units you can access
- EDC1, engine control: The electronic diesel engine control. Read fault codes and live data here.
- EDC CP, instrument cluster: The electronic instrument cluster module. Jaltest retrieves system information from this unit, but not fault codes.
What you can do
- Read fault codes: Access the fault memory of the engine control module, complete with descriptions of detected faults.
- View live data: Monitor current sensor values connected to the engine control module.
- Live monitoring:Monitor live values whilst the engine is running — directly on the control panel.
Compatible vehicles and applications
The connector type is what matters, not the engine model. This version is for the 6-pin connector in the grey rectangular connector. The followinginboard engines carries out Jaltest Marine in the coverage; which connector you have on yourengine sits, you check on the spot.

- D-series: D3 through D16, including EVC2.0 variants
- IPS series:IPS 350 to IPS 1350

The four Volvo Penta cables side by side
Volvo Penta uses different diagnostic connectors depending on the engine generation and application, which means each configuration requires its own cable. Pin count alone won't guide you: TheJDC527A and the JDC611A are both six-pin, but the first has a grey rectangular connector with contact sockets and the second one black oval connector with pins in a purple contact holder. Only the JDC618A9 requires a Jaltest Link V9; the other three also work on V8.1.
