The Jaltest JDC628A does not connect to a socket on the engine, but to the boat's NMEA 2000 network. The cable end features a T-connector with three round threaded ports: on one side a plug with five pins and external thread, on the other side a socket with five contacts and a knurled nut, and between them the branch point where this cable's lead is screwed. You connect the first two between two existing network segments, so the T-connector sits in the main network trunk and the rest of the equipment remains connected. Hence the designation 5+5-pin: these are two five-pin network connectors, not an engine plug. At the other end is the 16-pin OBD2 connector; the cable measures 28 to 30 cm.

Via the network, the Jaltest equipment reaches the control units of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 installation. This cable serves the NMEA 2000 version and thereby provides access to the engine control EMM G2, with the full feature set, and to the EST, the electronic throttle control module. On the latter, the list is shorter: Reset and live monitoring are not available. Over the same network, the G2 engines communicate with the instruments and controls on board, which is why the connection only works if the network is powered and the engine is connected. The cable falls under Jaltest Marine.

ADVANTAGES

IMPORTANT NOTES

The EST lacks reset and live monitoring capabilities: From the throttle module you can read fault codes, measured values, ECU data, parameters and calibration.
You require an NMEA 2000 network onboard to which the engine is connected, with a trunk coupling that you can disconnect and which carries power.
For the NMEA 2000 version only; the same EMM G2 is also available in a serial version with its own connector.
Older E-TEC, FICHT RAM and EFI engines use the standard EMM without G2 networking; the JDC609.9 is designed for those.

Applications and functionality

Through this connection you access the control units of the Evinrude G2 installation using Jaltest software. Because the cable sits in the network trunk, you see what the engine reports over that network. The units listed below are covered by Evinrude support.

Control units you can access

  • EMM G2 (NMEA 2000), engine control: The engine control unit in the network configuration, with fault codes, measured values, component actuation, ECU data, parameters, calibration, maintenance reset and live monitoring.
  • EST, throttle control module: The electronic throttle control module, including fault codes, live data, component activation, ECU information, parameters and calibration; no reset and no live monitoring.

What you can do

  • Read fault codes: Access the fault memory of both the engine control unit and throttle control module.
  • View live data: Monitor the current readings from all connected sensors.
  • Activate components: Perform active tests on both the engine control and throttle control modules.
  • Parameters and calibration: Adjust settings and set reference values on both control units.
  • Reset maintenance reminder: Clear the service interval counter on the engine control unit.
  • Live monitoring: Track engine control unit values in real time whilst the motor is running.

Compatible vehicles and applications

The network type determines compatibility, not the model.This cable is designed for Evinrude E-TEC G2 outboard motors that transmit data over a NMEA 2000 network. Jaltest Marine covers the models listed below; you can identify whether your installation has the network by locating the round threaded connectors in the harness behind the instrument panel.

Useful to know: This cable is installed into the network harness, not directly onto the motor. You will need a NMEA 2000 network on board connected to the motor, plus an accessible connector in that harness where you can unscrew and insert the T-piece. The same engine control unit is also available in a serial version with a different connector. Follow the network harness and locate an accessible connector before ordering.
