The Topdon VAG SFD Authorization License is a digital software authorization that grants technicians access to the secure diagnostic systems of recent vehicles from the Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG). The license unlocks the Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose (SFD), the security gateway used by the manufacturer to prevent unauthorized modifications to ECUs. Valid for 1 year.
Technically, the license functions as a digital key. When the Topdon device connects to an SFD-protected control module, the software sends an authorization request to Topdon's servers, which in turn communicate with the official VAG OEM backend to request a one-time unlock token. This token is sent to the vehicle, after which the module is temporarily released for diagnostics and adjustments.

Applications and Features
This license activates the required authorization protocols in your Topdon diagnostic device to communicate with SFD-protected systems:
- SFD authorization and unlock: Unlock protected ECUs. Once an SFD module is identified, the system automatically requests online authorization.
- Coding and adaptations: Perform coding, adaptations and parameterization on unlocked control units — such as teaching in new components or adjusting vehicle settings.
- Actuator testing: Send control components that are managed by SFD-protected modules — essential for accurate diagnostics.
- Service and maintenance functions: Reset service intervals, perform basic configuration, or calibrate systems protected by SFD encryption.

This license is designed for VAG vehicles with SFD security protocol, typically models from approximately 2020 onwards:
- Audi: A3 (8Y), Q4 e-tron, and other recent platforms.
- Volkswagen: Golf 8, ID.3, ID.4, Caddy V.
- SEAT: Leon (KL), Tarraco, and Ateca post-facelift.
- Škoda: Octavia IV, Enyaq iV, Fabia IV.

How does it work in practice?
- Ordering: Place your order and enter the 12-digit serial number of your Topdon device during checkout.
- Remote pairing: The manufacturer remotely links the license to your specified serial number. This process is irreversible.
- Activation process: Processing and activation typically take 7 business days. You will not receive a physical product.
- Usage: Once the license is active, you can update your Topdon device. When accessing an SFD-protected module, the device automatically requests authorization and obtains it through the servers.
Provide your serial number
The 12-digit serial number of your Topdon device is required for activation. Enter it correctly during ordering. You can find the serial number on:
- VCI module: On a sticker on the back of the VCI interface.
- Software menu: Under Settings > Profile or Info in the tablet software.
- Original packaging: On a sticker on the box.
