The Jaltest JDC618A9 is the diagnostic cable for Volvo Penta marine engines; it connects the 2-pin connector to the 16-pin OBD2 port of your Jaltest diagnostic device. This 2-pin plug doesn't fit a standard 16-pin OBD2 cable and is located in the engine compartment, on or next to the engine. Volvo Penta has used different diagnostic connectors for each engine generation: In addition to this 2-pin version, the catalog offers separate cables for 6-pin (JDC527A), 8-pin (JDC528A) and EGCI 6-pin (JDC611A).
Through this connection, the diagnostic equipment accesses the installation network and thus the engine control units ECM EGC and MEFI 3-4 as well as the EVC modules for helm station, propulsion and steering. The difference in coverage lies between these groups: On the ECM EGC you can read data, control components and adjust parameters and calibrations, while on the EVC parameter modules EVC-C and EVC-MC it remains limited to ECU data, parameters and calibration. Volvo Penta has never been bound to a mandatory standard connector, which is why this proprietary plug still appears on newer installations. The cable falls under Jaltest Marine.

Through this connection, you access with Jaltest software the control modules that Volvo Penta has installed in your system. Which ones are on your engine depends on the engine generation.
Control modules you can access
- ECM EGC — engine control: The Engine Control Module. Read fault codes and live data, command components, and perform parameter and calibration functions.
- MEFI 3-4 — legacy engine control: The electronic engine control system from earlier gasoline engines, with fault codes, live data, component actuation and ECU information; no parameters or calibration.
- EVC-C and EVC-MC — parameter modules: Configure system settings and perform calibrations.
- HIU (EVC) and HCU (EVC) — helm station: The helm interface unit and helm control unit at the control position.
- PCU (EVC) and SCU (EVC) — powertrain and steering: The common powertrain controller and steering control module.

- Command components: Perform active tests on the engine control.
