The Autool TG501 is a paint thickness gauge for measuring coating thickness on both ferrous (Fe) and non-ferrous (NFe) metal substrates. The device operates using magnetic induction for steel and the eddy current principle for aluminum and other non-ferrous metals, with automatic substrate detection. With a measurement range of 0 to 2,000 µm, a resolution of 0.1 µm to 100 µm and an accuracy of ±(3%+1 µm), the gauge is ideal for checking original paint, repaired bodywork and filler layers on vehicle bodies.

During measurement, the sensor at the base of the device is placed against the surface, and a reading appears on the LCD display in approximately half a second. The TG501 automatically switches between Fe and NFe modes based on the detected substrate and displays the value in µm, mm or mil. The display features automatic screen rotation and has a backlight for measurements in poorly lit areas. The gauge includes zero calibration for compensation on a reference surface and can store up to 80 measurements for later review.

KEY FEATURES

Automatic substrate detection — Switches seamlessly between ferrous and non-ferrous metals without manual adjustment.
Internal storage of 80 measurements — Eliminates the need to manually record measurements during a body inspection.
Auto-rotating display — Keeps readings clearly visible when measuring vertical or hard-to-reach panels.
Measures curved surfaces — Works on convex curves up to 5 mm radius and concave curves up to 25 mm, ideal for body contours and recesses.

IMPORTANT LIMITATIONS

Minimum measurement area of 15 mm — Narrow edges and trim lines cannot be reliably measured.
Minimum substrate thickness required — 0.30 mm for ferrous surfaces and 0.05 mm for non-ferrous metals.
Zero calibration required before use — For accurate readings, the gauge must first be zeroed on an uncoated reference surface.
No data export function — Stored measurements can only be viewed on the device itself and cannot be transferred to a PC or smartphone.

Application and functionality

The Autool TG501 supports the following measurement and display functions:

  • Ferrous measurement (Fe): Uses magnetic induction to determine coating thickness on steel and other ferrous substrates, perfect for checking body panels on passenger vehicles.
  • Non-ferrous measurement (NFe): Employs eddy current technology to measure layer thickness on aluminum and other non-magnetic metals, such as hoods and aluminum body panels.
  • Automatic mode detection: Automatically identifies whether the substrate is ferrous or non-ferrous and selects the appropriate measurement method without manual adjustment.
  • Unit conversion: Switch between µm, mm, and mil using the UNIT button to display readings in your preferred standard.
  • Zero calibration: Calibrates the meter against an uncoated reference surface to compensate for temperature and material variations.
  • Measurement storage: Stores up to 80 readings with sequence numbers, allowing you to review measurement series by panel or vehicle.
  • Delete measurements: Remove individual or all stored values using the delete button.

Special features and capabilities

The TG501 stands out with these distinctive features:

  • Auto-rotating display: The screen rotates with the device orientation, keeping readings legible when measuring the sides or underside of a vehicle.
  • High-precision sensor with fast response: Delivers up to 2 measurements per second, allowing multiple points on a panel to be checked in a short time.
  • Backlit display with dimming function: Ideal for use in dark workshops and under protective covers during inspections or damage repairs.

Package contents

  • 1x Autool TG501 paint thickness gauge
  • 3x AAA 1.5V battery
  • 1x Wrist strap
  • 1x Calibration plate set with Fe and Al substrate and reference foils
  • 1x User manual
💡
Good to know: Perform zero calibration on a bare metal reference of the same type—steel or aluminum—as the panel being measured. Calibrating on a different material can structurally affect the reading, especially for thin coatings under 50 µm.
