The Autool SPT360 is a stationary spark plug tester designed to diagnose components within the ignition system. This device enables technicians to visually inspect and assess the ignition spark of removed spark plugs outside the combustion chamber. The tester is primarily used for troubleshooting gasoline engines, allowing the spark plug's performance to be evaluated under variable loads to detect wear or defects.

During the diagnostic process, the tester generates high voltage itself to simulate the operation of an ignition coil, after which the spark strength and continuity are immediately visible. The user inserts the spark plug into one of five test ports, and the test speed is digitally adjustable between 200 and 9000 revolutions per minute. By adjusting the simulated engine speed, the stability of spark discharge at different RPMs can be visually compared with a reference spark plug in the base station, helping identify insulation problems or excessive electrode gap.

KEY FEATURES

Equipped with five test ports for direct comparison between one reference spark plug and four spark plugs to be tested.
Wide frequency range with adjustable RPM simulation from 200 to 9000 revolutions per minute.
Accurate display of the set RPM via the digital display, making tests repeatable.
Fitted with a transparent safety shield to prevent exposure to high voltage during testing.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Requires removal of spark plugs; in-vehicle system diagnosis is not possible.
Requires mains power via an adapter; the device does not operate independently on batteries.
Tests only the spark plug function and not the primary ignition signal from the vehicle.
Designed for gasoline engine spark plugs only — Glow plugs from diesel engines operate on a different principle and cannot be tested with this device.

Application and functionality

This spark plug tester offers various diagnostic functions for assessing removed spark plugs on the workbench.

  • Frequency simulation: Simulating engine speeds between 200 and 9000 revolutions per minute. This is used to check whether the spark plug remains stable at higher loads and frequencies or if flashover occurs.
  • Comparative diagnosis: Simultaneously testing multiple spark plugs. By placing a new or properly functioning reference spark plug in its designated port, the spark pattern can be directly compared in color and intensity with the suspect plugs.
  • Visual flashover detection: Assessing spark formation between the center electrode and ground electrode to detect insulation damage or fouling that causes current leakage.

Special features and capabilities

The tester hardware includes elements that contribute to safe and reproducible diagnostics.

  • Digital RPM display: A display shows the exact frequency currently set in revolutions per minute. This ensures reproducible test conditions when specific engine speeds need to be simulated.
  • Safety shield: A hinged, transparent plastic cover shields the user from the test ports. This prevents accidental contact with the generated high voltage while allowing visual inspection of spark development.

Compatible vehicles and ignition systems

This device is universally suitable for standard ignition components.

  • Vehicle category: Passenger cars, motorcycles, light commercial vehicles, and small gasoline engines in garden and park equipment.
  • Ignition system: 12V ignition systems with standard spark plugs.
  • Diagnostic application: Testing of individual, removed spark plugs for flashover and electrode wear.

Package contents

  • 1x Autool SPT360 spark plug tester
  • 1x Power adapter
  • 1x User manual
💡
Good to know: Make sure the safety cover is fully closed before starting the test, and never touch the spark plugs or test ports while the device is powered on. Take advantage of the five-port setup: place a new spark plug of the same type in the reference port and the four suspect plugs alongside it. This way, you assess the spark pattern objectively against a known good plug under exactly the same conditions.
