The Autool SDT203 is a smoke tester designed to detect leaks in sealed vehicle systems. The smoke generation operates on the principle of oxygen-depleted combustion of test oil, with the airflow driven by an integrated internal pump. The device delivers a maximum working pressure of 15 psi and comes with power supply supplied via a direct connection to a 12V DC power source, such as the vehicle battery. This method of leak detection is versatile and used for inspecting intake manifolds, exhaust systems, crankcase ventilation and fuel tanks.
During a diagnostic procedure, the smoke injection as soon as the device is connected to the circuit being tested using the supplied cone or inflatable adapters. The technician has control over the pressure control and the smoke density via the continuously adjustable flow meter on the front panel. An integrated analog pressure gauge displays the system pressure directly, making it possible to detect a pressure drop before the smoke supply begins. The final smoke visualization is created when the introduced smoke escapes through microscopic cracks, faulty seals or loose hoses, allowing you to quickly pinpoint the exact location of the vacuum or pressure leak.
KEY FEATURES
KEY FEATURES
Applications and Functionality
The smoke tester supports a wide range of leak detection procedures for inspecting closed circuit systems, engine components, and vacuum systems.
- Intake system test: Detect leaks and false air in the intake tract, including throttle bodies, intercoolers, and intake manifolds, to diagnose mixture problems and rough idle.
- Exhaust system test: Identify cracks, failed welds, or leaking flange gaskets in the exhaust system, which is critical for proper operation and oxygen sensor readings.
- Crankcase pressure test: Check the engine block and crankcase ventilation system for pressure loss along oil seals and valve cover gaskets.
- EVAP system test: Inspect the fuel vapor recovery system for fuel tank and line leaks using smoke, helping locate emission-related fault codes.
- Cooling system test: Find hairline cracks and poor seals in expansion tanks and coolant hoses when the system is empty and depressurized.
Special Features and Capabilities
This model is equipped with hardware components that optimize flow and pressure control of the smoke test for diagnostic technicians.
- Built-in flow meter with adjustment knob: Features a glass tube that allows the technician to continuously adjust smoke or air flow between 0 and 6 liters per minute, depending on the volume of the circuit being tested.
- Pressure loss indication via pressure gauge: A prominent analog pressure meter displays the pressure within the sealed circuit directly. With a closed supply, a falling needle immediately indicates a leak before smoke visually escapes.
- Thermal protection: When operating temperature exceeds 75°C, the unit automatically cuts power; below -20°C, frost protection activates.
- Fully independent pressure buildup: Thanks to the integrated air pump in the housing, the technician doesn't need to connect a shop air line. This increases mobility around and under the vehicle.
Compatible Vehicles and Systems
This smoke tester is designed for use on various 12V vehicle platforms, with adapters for common seal sizes.
- System type: EVAP circuits, air intake tracts, exhaust pipes, EGR systems, crankcase ventilation, vacuum lines, and fluid-free cooling circuits.
- Vehicle category: Passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and 12V boats.
- Diagnostic application: Checking component seals during emission faults, vacuum leaks, and power loss issues.
