The Vgate vLinker MC+ is an advanced ELM327 interface that connects to the vehicle’s OBD2 port. This device uses a Bluetooth 4.0 connection (including BLE) to establish a wireless and stable data transfer between the vehicle network and an external device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. The diagnostic interface is designed for reading and clearing fault codes, monitoring live data, and performing in-depth dealer-level vehicle diagnostics, depending on the software used.

Within the vehicle network, this OBD2 interface acts as a bridge between the electronic control units (ECUs) and the diagnostic software. Thanks to support for standard protocols such as CAN, ISO, and KWP2000, as well as manufacturer-specific protocols like SW-CAN (General Motors) and MS-CAN (Ford), the Adapter offers broad communication capabilities. The vLinker MC+ handles high data throughput with a UART baud rate up to 500Kbps and a 2K byte data buffer, resulting in fast interaction without delay during coding or reading complex data streams via compatible apps.

ADVANTAGES

Hardware support for SW-CAN and MS-CAN for in-depth diagnostics on GM and Ford.
High data transfer with a UART baud rate up to 500Kbps for fast communication.
Automatic sleep and wake function to prevent battery drain during prolonged connection.
Compatible with both Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for broad platform support.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Advanced features such as coding often require paid software from third parties.
Firmware updates require a specific Vgate app and an active internet connection.
A physical button must be pressed for the initial Bluetooth pairing on certain operating systems.

Applications and functionalities

The Vgate vLinker MC+ is designed for broad OBD2 diagnostics and manufacturer-specific applications. Actual functionality depends on the chosen diagnostic software.

  • Read and clear fault codes: Access the engine control unit (ECU) to identify Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and reset malfunction indicator lights (MIL).
  • Live data monitoring: Real-time reading of sensor data such as RPM, coolant temperature, fuel pressure, mass air flow sensor, and lambda sensor values.
  • Module coding and configuration: Ability to adjust hidden vehicle functions or configure new modules via apps like BimmerCode or FORScan.
  • Service and adaptation resets: Support for resetting maintenance intervals and learning or resetting components (if the application supports this).

Special features and capabilities

This interface features improved hardware components compared to standard ELM327 Adapters, resulting in advanced communication capabilities with vehicle networks.

  • Automatic Wake-up and Sleep: The Adapter detects activity in the vehicle network and switches on automatically. After the engine is turned off, the interface enters a low-power sleep mode to prevent battery drain.
  • Expanded data buffer: Equipped with a 2K byte data buffer, allowing it to process complex commands and large amounts of data without packet loss.
  • Direct network access: Handles simultaneous communication and supports MS-CAN and SW-CAN networks without needing a mechanical switch on the Adapter.
  • Internal protection circuits: Equipped with protection against overvoltage, overcurrent, and overheating to protect both the interface and the OBD2 port of the Car.

Supported protocols

This Adapter supports all standard OBD2 protocols, supplemented with specific manufacturer protocols for broader vehicle coverage.

  • SAE J1850 PWM / VPW: Older communication protocols mainly used in American vehicles, such as Ford and General Motors, before 2008.
  • ISO 9141-2 / ISO 14230-4 (KWP2000): Standard protocols for European and Asian vehicles from the early 2000s.
  • ISO 15765-4 (CAN): The modern standard for high-speed communication in the engine management system of vehicles produced after 2008.
  • MS-CAN (Medium Speed CAN): A manufacturer-specific protocol from Ford and Mazda, used for communication with comfort, infotainment, and body modules.
  • SW-CAN (Single Wire CAN / GMLAN): A manufacturer-specific network protocol from General Motors for asynchronous low-speed communication.

Compatible software and apps

The interface operates via open standards (ELM327/ELM329/STN) and is compatible with a wide range of third-party diagnostic tools.

  • FORScan (Windows / iOS / Android): Specialized software for in-depth diagnostics, active tests, and module configuration for Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, and Mercury.
  • BimmerCode / BimmerLink (iOS / Android): Specifically designed for reading all modules and coding hidden functions in BMW and MINI.
  • JScan (iOS / Android): Comprehensive diagnostic and programming application exclusively for Jeep, Chrysler, and Dodge vehicles.
  • Torque Pro (Android): Versatile app for reading standard OBD2 parameters, real-time dashboards, and performance measurements.
  • OBD Fusion / Car Doctor (iOS / Android / Windows): Generic diagnostic applications for monitoring engine parameters and performing emission tests.

Compatible operating systems

The built-in dual-mode Bluetooth chip makes the device usable on various platforms.

  • Android: Fully compatible via Bluetooth Classic. Suitable for pairing with smartphones and tablets for use with virtually all OBD2 apps.
  • iOS (Apple): Compatible via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Pairing does not occur through iOS settings but is established directly within the compatible app.
  • Windows: Supported via a regular Bluetooth connection for use with desktop and laptop software such as FORScan.
💡
Good to know: When using iOS devices (iPhone/iPad), you do not need to pair the vLinker MC+ via Bluetooth settings. Open the diagnostic software directly and select the Adapter from the application settings to avoid communication issues.
