The Vgate vLinker FS interface cable forms a direct, wired data connection between the vehicle’s OBD2 port and an external system via a USB connection. This interface cable is specifically optimized for in-depth vehicle diagnostics, module configuration adjustments, and performing complex programming tasks. Because communication occurs via a physical cable, the chance of data loss or interference is minimized, which is an absolute requirement when flashing or reprogramming control units through PC-based diagnostic software.

Within the diagnostic network, the interface cable acts as a fast translator between vehicle protocols and software thanks to a built-in 32-bit processor. The device applies automatic electronic switching to seamlessly switch between HS-CAN and MS-CAN without the user needing to manually toggle a physical switch. This enables diagnostic software like FORScan to simultaneously read data parameters from different CAN buses and directly access advanced vehicle modules that are normally shielded from standard OBD2 readers.

ADVANTAGES

Equipped with automatic electronic switching between HS-CAN and MS-CAN networks.
Supports FEPS 18V output for safely performing programming procedures.
High data processing with a transmission speed up to 3Mbps and a large serial buffer.
Built-in battery-saving technology with a sleep mode of only 3 mA.

KEY POINTS

The physical USB connection limits mobility around the vehicle compared to wireless interfaces.
Requires a PC or laptop with Windows; not compatible with mobile operating systems such as iOS or Android.
Advanced module-specific features are mainly limited to Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, and Mercury.

Applications and functionalities

The Vgate vLinker FS, combined with the appropriate software, offers extensive diagnostic capabilities for both standard OBD2 analysis and brand-specific protocols.

  • Read and Clear Fault Codes: Retrieving diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from all available control units, including ABS, SRS, and transmission, which can then be cleared after repair.
  • Module Configuration (AS-BUILT): Adjusting hexadecimal values within control units to activate hidden factory options or register aftermarket installations.
  • Live Data Display: Real-time monitoring of sensor data from various CAN networks to analyze malfunctions during engine or electronics operation.
  • Perform Service Resets: Resetting maintenance intervals, steering angle calibrations, and learning new batteries in the Battery Management System (BMS).

Special features and capabilities

The hardware of the vLinker FS is designed to bridge specific communication limitations of standard OBD2 cables.

  • Automatic Electronic Switching: The cable automatically detects which CAN network (High-Speed or Medium-Speed) needs to be accessed and switches electronically, eliminating incorrect manual switching actions.
  • FEPS 18V Programming Output: Provides the required 18 Volt Flash EEPROM Programming Signal voltage needed for reprogramming or updating specific older Ford modules.
  • High Bandwidth Processing: Supports OBD request bytes up to 4128 bytes and features a serial buffer of 8192 bytes, which is essential for processing large data packets without connection loss ("drop-outs").
  • Battery Monitoring System: The device detects when the vehicle is at rest and automatically switches to a sleep mode with a consumption of only 3 mA, allowing the interface cable to remain safely connected.

Compatible vehicles

This interface cable supports all standard 12V and 24V OBD2-compatible vehicles, but the advanced protocol support (HS/MS-CAN) is explicitly designed for vehicles from the Ford group.

Full compatibility (including MS-CAN & FEPS):

  • Ford: Almost all models with an OBD2 port (from around 1996), including modern models with complex CAN topologies.
  • Mazda: Models designed during collaboration with Ford (using Ford protocols).
  • Lincoln: All OBD2-compatible generations.
  • Mercury: All OBD2-compatible generations.

Compatible software and operating systems

The Vgate vLinker FS functions solely as a data pass-through and requires external diagnostic software on a PC or laptop to operate.

Compatible software:

  • FORScan: Officially recommended hardware ("Made for FORScan") for access to all advanced diagnostic and programming functions.
  • Standard OBD2 software: To be used with generic terminal or OBD2 diagnostic programs for reading standard emission-related protocols.

Operating systems:

  • Windows: 2000, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 (32-bit and 64-bit).
💡
Good to know: When performing programming tasks or changing module configurations via FORScan, always ensure the laptop is connected to mains power and the vehicle is equipped with a stabilized battery charger to prevent voltage drops.
