The Universal Mini II ELM327 interface enables wireless communication via a Bluetooth 4.0 connection between the vehicle’s OBD2 port and an external device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. This compact diagnostic interface is designed for reading and clearing generic engine-related fault codes (DTCs), monitoring live data, and performing basic vehicle diagnostics on vehicles compliant with the OBD2 standard.
During use, the interface acts as a bridge between the vehicle network and the chosen diagnostic software. Data transfer takes place via standardized communication protocols such as CAN, ISO, and KWP2000. Once the Adapter is connected, the internal microcontroller translates the raw sensor data from the ECU into a readable format for compatible applications. This allows communication to be established directly, enabling parameters such as engine speed, coolant temperature, and intake pressure to be analyzed in real time.
ADVANTAGES
POINTS OF ATTENTION
Applications and functionalities
The Universal Mini II ELM327 provides access to the standardized diagnostic capabilities of the engine management system. The exact available functions depend on the software used and vehicle support.
- Read and clear fault codes: Retrieving and resetting generic and manufacturer-specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from the engine ECU, as well as turning off the Check Engine light (MIL).
- Live data streaming: Real-time display of sensor values, including engine speed, calculated load, coolant temperature, fuel system status, and vehicle speed.
- I/M Readiness status: Checks the status of emission-related systems, useful as preparation for an emissions test or MOT inspection.
- Freeze Frame data retrieval: Reading a snapshot of sensor values at the exact moment a fault code was registered by the ECU.
Special features and capabilities
This interface has some specific hardware features that support practical use.
- Bluetooth 4.0 Dual-Mode: Uses both Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for iOS devices and standard Bluetooth for Android and Windows devices, broadening compatibility.
- Low Profile housing: Thanks to the compact size of the Adapter, it protrudes minimally from the OBD2 port, so it does not obstruct the driver’s legroom in most vehicles during driving and measuring.
Supported protocols
The interface communicates with the vehicle via the standardized OBD2 protocols listed below.
- ISO 15765-4 (CAN): The modern network protocol for fast data communication, standard in almost all vehicles from 2008 onwards.
- ISO 14230-4 (KWP2000): A widely used protocol in European and Asian vehicles produced between 2000 and 2007.
- ISO 9141-2: Mainly used in older European, Asian, and Chrysler vehicles.
- SAE J1850 PWM / VPW: Protocols mainly used by American manufacturers such as Ford and General Motors before the introduction of CAN.
Compatible software and apps
External diagnostic software is required to use the interface. The applications below are common and compatible with ELM327 devices.
- Car Scanner ELM OBD2 (iOS / Android): Broad application for reading OBD2 data, live sensors, and displaying dashboards.
- Torque Pro (Android): Comprehensive diagnostic app for Android, specifically focused on live data display, performance, and reading the engine ECU.
- Infocar (iOS / Android): Suitable for general diagnostics, vehicle management, and analyzing driving behavior via the OBD2 port.
- OBD Car Doctor (Windows / iOS / Android): Platform-independent software for reading emission-related statuses and fault codes.
Compatible Operating Systems
The interface is designed to work with various platforms, depending on the wireless protocols supported by the receiving device.
- iOS: Compatible via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). No manual Bluetooth pairing needed; the connection is established directly in the chosen app.
- Android: Fully compatible from Android 4.3 (Bluetooth 4.0 support required). Pairing is done via the standard Bluetooth settings or directly in the app.
- Windows: Compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems that have built-in Bluetooth support.
