The Tesla 20-pin to 16-pin OBD2 adapter cable is designed to connect the vehicle-specific interface of compatible Tesla models to universal diagnostic equipment. This cable converts the internal 20-pin connector, usually located behind the center console of the vehicle, to a standard 16-pin OBD2 female connection.

The adapter allows direct access to the vehicle’s CAN bus data, a functionality not available via the standard USB ports or display. With the correct pin configuration, the cable ensures stable signal transmission to a connected OBD2 interface or dongle, which is necessary for reading in-depth vehicle parameters via external diagnostic software.

ADVANTAGES

Suitable for reading specific CAN bus data such as battery status and motor temperatures.
Specific fit for the blue or white 20-pin connector in Model 3 and Model Y.
Allows use of standard OBD2 dongles on a Tesla vehicle.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Installation requires removing an interior panel at the rear of the center console.
The vehicle must be completely turned off before connecting the cable to avoid error messages.
Not compatible with Tesla Model 3 vehicles produced before January 2019 (these use a 26-pin connector).

Applications and functionalities

This adapter cable enables data extraction via specific diagnostic software (such as Scan My Tesla or TesLAX) that is crucial for technical analysis.

  • Battery diagnosis: Reading State of Health (SoH), cell voltages, temperatures, and charge cycles of the HV battery pack.
  • Drivetrain analysis: Monitoring real-time data such as torque, power, and temperatures of the electric motors and inverters.
  • Thermal management: Insight into the status of the heat pump, coolant pumps, and battery heating.
  • Charging information: Detailed display of AC and DC charging sessions including charging losses and charging speeds.

Compatible vehicles and applications

This adapter cable is specifically configured for Tesla models that use the 20-pin OBD connector in the center console.

Tesla:

  • Model 3: (From production date January 2019)
  • Model Y: (All production years)
💡
Good to know: The diagnostic connector is located behind the panel under the air vents for the rear passengers. For Model 3s made before 2019, a different cable with a 26-pin connector is required.
