The ELS27 interface cable is an advanced diagnostic interface that creates a direct bridge between the vehicle's OBD2 port and a USB connection of a PC or laptop. This cable is specifically designed for in-depth diagnostics, module coding, and active programming primarily in vehicles with a separated CAN bus architecture. The interface creates a stable, wired connection between the vehicle networks and PC-based diagnostic software, giving diagnostic technicians and mechanics direct access to the underlying onboard electronics.
During use, the ELS27 reads data via various communication protocols, with the interface automatically switching between standard HS-CAN (High Speed) and the specific MS-CAN (Medium Speed). Unlike similar interfaces, no physical switch is needed; the internal microcontroller handles routing entirely independently. This ensures uninterrupted data transfer to software programs such as FORScan. The high baud rate of the integrated STN chipset guarantees fast and error-free bidirectional communication, which is essential when safely writing configuration data or flashing new control modules.
ADVANTAGES
KEY POINTS
Applications and functionalities
The ELS27 offers extensive vehicle diagnostic capabilities, with a strong focus on the specific network architecture of Ford and Mazda. Depending on the software used, the interface facilitates the following functions:
- Reading and clearing fault codes (DTCs): Retrieving and resetting manufacturer-specific fault codes from all present modules, including engine management, transmission, ABS, and the instrument panel.
- Live data analysis: Real-time monitoring of sensor data and PIDs, such as injector pressures, turbo values, and exhaust gas temperatures, crucial for fault diagnosis with a running engine.
- Maintenance resets (Service Functions): Performing regular service-related functions, such as resetting the Battery Management System (BMS) after battery standardization or calibrating the steering angle sensor.
- Active component test: Bidirectional control allowing the technician to temporarily activate physical components (such as fans, fuel pumps, and EGR valves) to verify their operation.
Special features and capabilities
Thanks to the STN chip and support for multiple CAN buses, the ELS27 can perform complex configuration changes that are not possible with standard OBD2 scanners.
- AS-BUILT data programming: Reading, modifying, and writing hexadecimal factory configurations (AS-BUILT) to enable or disable specific vehicle options and accessories.
- Automatic MS-CAN detection: Seamlessly and software-based accessing the Medium Speed CAN bus, allowing access to comfort and infotainment modules without manual intervention.
- Module initialization and adaptation: Pairing or learning new electronic control units (ECUs) after they have been physically replaced in the vehicle.
- DPF regeneration and adaptation value reset: Forcibly starting a diesel particulate filter regeneration and resetting learned adaptation values in the fuel and transmission control modules.
Compatible vehicles
The interface cable is designed primarily to communicate with vehicles using the separated CAN protocols of the Ford Motor Company. The cable can also be used as a standard OBD2 interface for other brands.
Ford:
- Focus (MK2 / MK3 / MK4): (2004 - present)
- Mondeo (MK4 / MK5): (2007 - present)
- Fiesta (MK6 / MK7 / MK8): (2002 - present)
- Transit / Transit Custom: (2006 - present)
- Kuga / Puma / Ranger: (All models with CAN support)
Mazda:
- Mazda 2, 3, 5, 6: (Model years with CAN bus communication, from approx. 2004)
- CX-3, CX-5, CX-7: (All generations)
Lincoln & Mercury:
- Various models: (All models based on Ford architecture and equipped with a J1962 OBD2 port)
Compatible software and operating systems
The ELS27 hardware provides only the communication bridge; for actual functionality, the user must use third-party diagnostic software.
Compatible software:
- FORScan: For in-depth diagnostics, clearing fault codes, bidirectional tests, and AS-BUILT programming (Ford, Mazda, Lincoln).
- ELMConfig: For adjusting module configurations specifically on the Ford Focus MK2, C-Max, and Kuga MK1.
- FoCCCus: Specialized tool for configuration and network adjustments on the Ford Focus MK3.
Operating systems:
- Windows: Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. (Correct FTDI or Prolific USB drivers are required for COM port assignment).
