The BMW K+DCAN OBD2 with USB switch is a specialized interface cable designed for vehicle diagnostics, coding, and programming. The cable uses a standard OBD2 connector on the vehicle side and a USB connection for linking to a PC or laptop. This creates a direct, wired bridge between the vehicle's electronic control units (ECUs) and an external computer system. As a result, the cable is suitable for performing specific dealer-level tasks via independent diagnostic software.
During use, this interface cable functions as the primary translator between the vehicle network and the diagnostic software. The built-in physical switch allows manual switching between the older K-Line protocol and the newer D-CAN protocol by physically bridging or separating pin 7 and pin 8 on the OBD2 connector. This enables the cable to support various model years and system architectures without additional adapters. The integrated FTDI chipset ensures stable serial data transfer, which is essential for safely flashing modules and maintaining error-free communication during complex diagnostic procedures.
ADVANTAGES
IMPORTANT NOTES
Applications and functionalities
This interface cable offers broad diagnostic capabilities for specific vehicles from the E and R series when used with the appropriate software.
- Reading and clearing fault codes: Scanning all present electronic control units to view stored fault codes (DTCs) and clear them after a repair.
- Monitoring live data: Real-time insight into sensor values such as engine speed, turbo pressure, injection times, and battery voltage during vehicle operation.
- Resetting service intervals: Resetting the Condition Based Service (CBS) notifications for oil, brakes, and vehicle inspections via the OBD port.
- Learning components: Performing basic calibrations, such as registering a new battery or learning replacement injectors in the engine management.
Special features and capabilities
The hardware of this cable is equipped with components that support advanced vehicle customizations.
- Manual protocol switching: The physical button switches the bridging of pin 7 and 8 on and off. Pin 7 and 8 connected is required for older vehicles up to model year 03/2007 (K-Line), separated is for newer vehicles (D-CAN).
- Module coding: Supports communication with software such as NCS Expert to activate hidden vehicle functions, such as lighting behavior or alarm systems.
- ECU programming: Enables data transfer for flashing firmware or software updates to specific control units via WinKFP.
- FTDI serial communication: The built-in chipset emulates a reliable virtual COM port required for the timing-sensitive protocols of dealer-level software.
Compatible vehicles
The interface cable is designed for use with specific vehicle generations that use K-Line and D-CAN communication.
BMW:
- E-Series (K-Line): Models from approx. 1998 to 03/2007 (e.g., E39, E46, early E60/E90). Requires the switch in the bridged position (Pin 7+8).
- E-Series (D-CAN): Models from 03/2007 to the end of E-series production (e.g., late E60, E90, E70, E87). Requires the switch in the separated position.
Mini:
- R-Series: Models such as the R56 (from approx. 2006). Communication depends on the exact model year K-Line or D-CAN.
Compatible software and operating systems
Third-party software or specific dealer-level software is required for the operation of this interface cable. The cable itself is supplied without software.
Compatible diagnostic software:
- INPA / EDIABAS: For quick diagnostics, live data, and reading fault codes.
- ISTA-D (Rheingold) / ISTA-P: For comprehensive diagnostics, wiring diagrams, troubleshooting, and programming.
- NCS Expert / NCS Dummy: For customizing vehicle coding and Car & Key memory.
- WinKFP / Tool32: For in-depth module programming and performing specific ECU jobs.
Operating systems:
- Windows: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11 (32-bit & 64-bit). Requires manual driver installation for the virtual COM port.
