EURO V passthru

Within the EURO V legislation in 2009, agreements were made that a car manufacturer provides online diagnostic software and software updates for all garages. To ensure that the new software versions can actually be flashed into a vehicle, a module is needed between the computer and the vehicle network that performs a translation function. When such a module is equipped with the SAE J2534 protocol, we call this a pass thru module. The SAE J2534 protocol is a kind of universal language that allows communication between the vehicle and the equipment connected to the vehicle.

Pass thru interface:

The pass thru regulations SAE J2534 and ISO22900 determine the standard flash interfaces of the ECUs regarding software and hardware components. This is required by European legislation, starting with Euro V for light vehicles and from Euro VI also for commercial vehicles of all car manufacturers.

The standard requires that universal workshops with only one VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) have the ability to use different software from car manufacturers to communicate with the vehicle's computers and flash software.

There are various pass thru interfaces available. They should only comply with the SAE J2534 standard. This standard defines which communication protocols a pass thru interface must minimally support to enable reprogramming of control units. These are:

  1. K-line ISO 9141
  2. KWP2000 ISO 14230.4
  3. SCI SAE J2610
  4. CAN ISO 15765-4
  5. CAN 2.0B ISO 11898
  6. SAE J1850 VPW
  7. SAE J1850 PWM

Nowadays, online reprogramming plays a very important role because components cannot operate with the correct software to perform their task. Sometimes during chiptuning, a crash occurs. It would be very convenient if, when the engine control unit has crashed, you can flash the old software within your reach and do not have to go to the dealer to provide the car with the software, which can save considerable time and money.
