To connect to a control unit, there is a so-called DLC (Data Link Connector) in the vehicle. This DLC used to vary by manufacturer. Since the entry into force of the EOBD legislation, this DLC has been standardized and is known to us as the 16-pin OBD connector. All cars with EOBD are equipped with the standardized DLC so that the controlling authority and authorized personnel can read the relevant EOBD data.

According to legislation, the DLC must be placed within one meter of the steering wheel and be easily accessible to maintenance personnel. Generally, it is located at the bottom of the dashboard.
The 16-pin OBD connector is only mandatory for reading environmental-related faults. It therefore happens that two or more diagnostic connectors are present in the vehicle: one for EOBD and the other for non-environmental related data.
