On Board Diagnostics (OBD) means that the computers in the car diagnose themselves and warn the driver if something is wrong.
Sometimes certain information can be read by the driver via the dashboard, but usually, they are referred to the workshop. The workshop has a diagnostic device. This device is capable of connecting to the computers in the car and can then read the fault codes.
What information the workshop can retrieve from the car's computers and what programming the workshop can perform depends not only on the car's self-diagnosis but also on the diagnostic tester the workshop owns. Choosing a good reading device is also very important!
There are different types of testers that can be divided into 4 categories:
1. EOBD Tester
This tester can basically only read and control what is included in the EOBD legislation; here are some examples:
- Autel Code Reader
- Launch Code Reader
- Topdon Code Reader
- Foxwell Code Reader
2. Multi-brand diagnostic tester
These testers often can do more than an EOBD tester. They often allow access to computers that are not environmentally related such as ABS, ESP, Central electronics. You can also read multiple brands with these. However, these testers do not go as deep into the system as a dealer tester. Here are some examples:
3. Dealer testers
The dealer network has a specific diagnostic tester from the manufacturer that often supports only one brand. This is very comprehensive and allows you to go deeper into the software than with an EOBD or a Multi-brand diagnostic tester. These types of testers are usually very expensive to purchase, and you are also bound to a monthly or yearly license obligation! Here are some examples:

- Opcom: Opel
- Dice: Volvo
- Clip: Renault
- ODIS: Volkswagen / Audi / Seat / Skoda / Bentley / Lamborghini
4. Development software
Development software is the software with which a manufacturer develops the software in the computers. With a tester that has this installed, you can adjust everything in a computer. You can truly program a computer with this. You will not encounter this software in a regular workshop.
Nowadays universal diagnostic devices are much more advanced, allowing you to perform online control unit programming with universal diagnostic devices using the right software. However, the reader device must support the correct protocol!
